Another Band aid approach to the real issue of driver education, if people can understand what 200km/h can do, maybe they will not be as tempted once they are tested on trying to swerve and pull a car up at 100km/h, as an example.

Why is it in other countries that have higher speed limits, and faster cars don't have the same road toll that we do, in the UK they have just raised the motorway speed limit, and in the 2 months of operation has seen the toll decline.

Hmm maybe we should invest some research into overseas activities where revenue is not the key driver of decisions.

It is about speedometers being limited to show only to 130kph. Go over that and you're just guessing. The idea is to remove young or inexperienced drivers from the temptation of testing their new speedrocket to see how fast it can go. I can actually see some merit in this proposal when applied to a single car situation. However it will not stop people from racing as such if there are two or more cars present.

Saw a program on Foxtel yesterday how trucking companies in USA are looking at having a computer at their head office and with global positioning can monitor all aspects of any truck in their fleet and will be able to limit horsepower on the truck for any given driving condition/terrain to get the optimal efficiency out of the truck, thus saving $1000's in fuel costs. And you can bet London to a brick it won't be long before 'nanny' pollies like Bracks and Co will look at this for cars as well.

The sooner these limp d!cked pr!cks get well and truely kicked out of office the better.

I don't think it can be seen as the thin edge of the wedge as such - there is a whole different argument surrounding limiting engine output or vehicle speed.

But I do see where you are coming from and I do agree that we will be heading down that road in the future. It will be only a decade I reckon before we will see vehicles fitted with active collision avoidance systems. This will include vehicle speed limiters that will activate according to the surrounding terrain/traffic situation.

The way I see it the sooner the better. Why? Because if all vehicles had these sophisticated systems the speed limits could actually be raised on the open road and in light traffic conditions. We effectively take the driver's interpretation of what is a safe speed out of the equation. Safe speed can be determined by sensors in the vehicle. Less driver input, less margin for error, less road deaths. Works for me.
