When I was young and idealistic I was for a republic...not anymore. I can see the positives, but overall I just dont see the need. What do u fellas think?

I would want a republic & a new flag, but I also think that this discussion is a waste of time. Our current political climate & the existing govt means that this topic will not make the agenda again for a long time. :censored:

I'd like to see us become a republic although there are a million more issues that we need to address before we get to that one...

cvanxr,

I agree with you. I think a new flag is a good idea. I mean our flag looks like the NZ one and, to me, it makes us look like mini-UK when we have a seperate identity. I mean the Canadian option is decent - they got a new flag but kept their form of government. My grandfather fought under the current flag in WWI - so what, that's then, this is now.

Maybe in this poll I should have changed the choices to include:

"Yes, Id like a republic, but its such a low priority in the scheme of things." Which is what I probably would have selected.

Our head of state is the Queen of England and we have their flag too. Makes us look like we're still part of Britain.

As for the arguement about soldiers having fought for the flag, I think they usually fight for the country and don't really give a damn what the flag looks like.
