September 13, 200422 yr #1 I know this has been talked about before awhile ago. I was wondering if there were people that had any new information. What sort of costs would be involved in getting this set up. What parts are needed and is this able to be done by myself. I've heard that there is some special connectors and cables and stuff aswell. Are these readily available now and how hard to install.Thanks,Geea.
September 14, 200422 yr #4 Hi Geea,I reckon you can't go past an xbox as your DVD player. It may not be as easy to use as a dedicated in-car dvd player however it does more for less. You needSignal converter eg Blaupunkt IVSC-5501 or similar (about $300)Converter-to-ICC lead - Blau make these, retail for $180- I have a spare one that you can have for $150Chipped xbox- around $300 these daysPower inverter- about $80Aux input lead- if you don't already have one, they are $28 from Ford.Total cost would be around 800 bucks if you don't have any of the components already. The best thing about it is that it can be used to play mp3s, video clips (eg mpegs and avis), display photos- as well as playing DVDs. The signal converter also has provisions for additional monitor outputs and additional NTSC video inputs too. That will allow the addition of a TV tuner etc.And it's not too difficult to install either.Cheers,Anthony

I have one at home that's not chipped. How hard would it be to install this by myself. I don't know alot about it but I have just finished installing my 4th set of blue window switches, so I'm able to follow instructions. If I can't use the Xbox would another dvd player do the job or does it have to be an xbox? With the converter, why are they so much? What does it do.Maybe I can bribe someone on here with a couple of memberships to my strip clubs to come install it if I provide the parts. Geea.

September 15, 200422 yr #7 Thanks Anthony. Does the Xbox have to be chipped? I have one at home that's not chipped. How hard would it be to install this by myself. Geea,Yeah the xbox needs to be chipped in order to output in the NTSC video format- which is what the ICC discplays video in. I got a "xenium" chip (about $100), and switching between the Australian PAL format and NTSC is easy.As for installation, I don't consider myself a professional installer at all- there are wires showing here and there in my car because I am not going to even think about trying to remove the console or pull the dash apart to hide them properly.I'm sure that there are other DVD players available that may or may not require the use of the signal converter (although I haven't heard of any that don't need it). In my situation, I needed the converter to basically safely "join" the horizontal and vertical sync signals- so it was way overkill for me. I am sure that by spending a bit more time on it that we could have found a way to eliminate the need to use the converter- but having it handy as it also allows me to use any video source with a single RCA output (providing of course that it can output in NTSC). It also has multiple inputs and outputs. In a nutshell, I would imagine the DVD player to be a slightly more integrated and easy to use situation- but the xbox will be the far more impressive and flexible (with regards to playback capabilities) solution. There are several threads from late last year & early this year from guys like Aaron and George (and a few others) that will go into the more technical side of things. Those guys really know their stuff.Cheers,AnthonyPS make it a few memberships to the strip clubs AND a good drive in the new T and we'll call it a deal. .
September 15, 200422 yr #8 Geea, I have heard of alot of guys using XBoxes in the BA's. As Poida said, a mod to your Xbox and you are half way there. If you want to go down that route, take your Xbox along to a computer swap meet one Sunday and someone should be able to do it for you while you wait. Here is a link to find out where the next swap meet will be. http://www.comtrader.com.au/swap/Luke.
September 15, 200422 yr #9 Author Thanks guys, I'm learning all the time.Would something like THIS be of any use? I believe that Blaupunkt have a signal converter HERE would they do the same job?Does the Blaupunkt signal converter just plug into the auxillitory plug like a I-Pod?Geea.
September 16, 200422 yr #10 With the Blaupunkt signal converter you can add several screens and also add PS2 and Xbox to play Craig....it's worked for me
