Although the 4 door skyline is pretty ordinary it has more sport in its bloodline then the falcon - considering it is related to one of the greatest performance cars to come out Japan, R34 GTR

Um I think you didn't think to hard on that one, go back & look through the history on the Falcon & you'll see some prettysporty numbers, I seem to remember something about an XR GT, Phase III, XE ESP & so on & so on

Those are the kinds of comments I was trying to draw from everyone. It seems like you have some ogres lurking behind the doorways to your forums ready to pounce on first timers who haven't that much praise for the XR6T.

Thanks guys. I did note that Shaw commented on the stock R34's handling as "atrocious!". And that's what it seemed like watching the skyline's track characteristics from inside the XR6T. I think it even almost lost control at one point.

The other thing was Luffy's comment that the modded R34 seemed to have much more power than the T. I think that it must have been the R34's suspension setup that gave that impression. Maybe the damper setting was set on high/hard which could have been done for drifting purposes. Hence the ease in letting the rears break out. It also seemed that the wheels of the R34, especially the rears, are quite wide (265s, 275s) which would have necessitated a hard suspension setup for drifting purposes. I'd say it would have been more difficult to power oversteer with the 34.

The T, on the other hand, had no aftermarket suspension. Being set up from the factory mainly for road use, the suspension would have been on the soft side. The tyre widths are probably 225 or 235 at all fours (is that correct?). Therefore, it would have been pretty easy to light up the rears with the set up. Power oversteer would have been quite easy to induce with this setup.

Certainly no ogres lurking on this site ready to pound unfounded comparisons relating to the Falcon.

I haven't seen the DVD and don;t think I ever will either. My annoyance was the fact that a modified Datsun was compared to a basically stock XR6T and the inference that the Datsun 'won'.

The fact that the 'doof doof' brigade can buy one cheap and there is a plethora of aftermarket stuff for a car that has been around for donkey's years and the Falcon is still new and the 'go fast gear' is still coming.

The fact remains that the Falcon WILL be a feared SOB once the development of the modifications for the drive train is continually developed and becomes cheaper.

The Falcon has a sporting lineage going back to the early '60's where the Falcon Sprint was used to great effect winning the British Touring car Championship with Frank Gardner etc. It continues its sporting lineage continuously with a sports/touring/GT version available since it's inception in Australia.

The Datsun Skyline also has a sporting lineage.

The Datsun set up for drifting? What's drifting. Whatever it is it's not motor racing. It obviously appeals to people but not as much as mechanical grip, neutrality and the ability to recover from loss of grip.

The Falcon may become popular with lots of people when they become more prevalent on the used market. However, they will never be a "Performance Stickers and Bodykits" type of car because they are too 'Skippy'.

Plenty of morons drive Commodores, Falcons and 'little Asian cars' and give enthusiasts a bad name. That won't change. The ratio of moron to Falcon/Late model camira to moron to 'little cars' will though. The 'little cars' will always have more of the cranker per millilitre ratio.

I'd certainly back a 440 Six Pack Plymouth Road Runner or a 426 Hemi 'Cuda against a "Perfomance Stickers and Bodykits" modified grey import in a quarter mile, burnout comp, 5 laps of Oran Park or drifting exhibition.

The Mopar is no easy beat with modern tyres, brakes and suspension componentry.

Fair call, and they're all great cars however I was infering that a 'true' sports car is traditionally a light(ish), purpose built coupe, not a heavy four door family sedan that has been transformed into something 'sporty' by droping in a big 'f*ck off V8' (as my brother would say describing his R/T Challenger).

To keep things balanced, correct me if I'm wrong, but did the HO Phase III have the same engine as the GT40 (Now that's a car)? All I'm saying is that I beleive the Skyline to be more sporting then the Falcon, but I hear what your saying...
