How could anyone NOT be a Mustang fan..... Well, I suppose some people don't like Jap rubbish (like me) so I guess I can see that some people don't like American muscle! Now that Cobra is a fine piece of American muscle car!

I was incorrect about the suspension on the XR ute (I should know better as I owned one of those as well but I stuffed in my post and never got around to correcting it) The fact is that the XR ute with a leaf sprung rear end is a very good handling car in comparison to the sedan version with IRS (trailing arm al la' Expensive Daewoo or IRS/Control link in the Ford) with the addition of a high load capability as opposed to the IRS Late model camira ute. I have every right to question your assumptions considering you have not qualified your expertise prior to your last post! You make a definitive statement about the handling characteristics of an XR ute with a leaf sprung rear end and compare it to a crappy Jap Hilux POS. Now the point I have made is that the leaf sprung rear suspension can be made safe, secure and predictable with the benefit of mofdern technology therefore should not be denigrated due to its origins because it doesn't have the luxury of the latest technological advancements. A corollary would be a revolver and an SLP. Both are as accurate as the other but the SLP has a greater magazine capacity and a quicker reloading system. Sometimes old tech is just as good as new tech with the benefit of easier usage.

I realise that I erred with the reference to the Watts link for the Utility. The Watts link is used in the Supercars beause they are strong, can handle large amounts of HP and Torque and they are cheap to produce and maintain. In your considerable driving experience you have obviously driven all sorts of vehicles with varied suspension configurations and have found that the leaf sprung rear end is tremendously awful. The leaf sprung rear end dates bac to the Arc, as does pushrods, carburettors and twin point distributors. Maybe the pushrod OHV 305cid engines in NASCAR don''t really sit on 9500RPM all day, produce over 600HP, run carbies etc They most likely have DOHC and EFI because that is modern technology An XR ute will handle very well in comparison to an equivalent Falcon or Expensive Daewoo sedan with XR or SS specs. If you don't think that an XR or SS handles well then you obviously don;t know how to drive a car outside of Playstation!- Pony Vs Goat
Live axle? Explain to me what is fundamentaly wrong with the live axle. The Falcon utility uses a live axle with Watts link and apart from a firm ride on broken surfaces, it actualy handles rather well. V8 Supercars need the live axle with Watts link due to the enormous horsepower they generate and they are cheap to produce, have enormous longevity and can be tuned effectively with a combination of springs, shocks and bars. The SVT Cobra sold in Australia by Ford was not the standard Mustang GT sold in the States. The Cobra has a fully independent rear suspension as well as the 4.6 quad cam Cobra motor. The GT Mustang used a live axle and a 4.6 SOHC engine. The Cobra may have 'only' produced 240kW but it only weighed arounf 1500kg+ and as such had a great power to weight ratio. It is a very good, very powerful and great handling car. The price in Australia was expensive but considering these cars are the only factory produced RHD Ford Mustangs in the world, the price of conversion was included in the retail price. So who didn't like the Mustang.....the motoring press...that's who! Basically anything that is built in America has to be bad right? I'm certainly not a 'bogan' as my previous cars included Mercedes E320, Alfa 147, Subaru WRX, Pulsar SSS, Nissan Patrol Ti, Plymouth Sport Fury, Falcon XR6 ute and currently a Ford Explorer. The Mustang is a great car and Ford needed a 'hero' car at the time it was brought here. I'm thankful it was the SVT Cobra and not the cheap Mustang GT. Now if Chrysler would only bring the Dodge HEMI Ram over here........- Speed Camera Defence!
A valid LIDAR ticket requires a number of things. First the officer must estimate the speed of the target (this is quite easy to do once you have years of practice), secondly the check must be of the minimum time (3 seconds), the tone emitted from the instrument must be constant and the target is under constant observation during the check. The LIDAR is easier to use (if you like just flogging law abiding taxpayers) than the mobile radar (Silver Eagle) as there are less mandatory procedures. LIDAR is very popular in the city or congested traffic areas. The Silver Eagle radar is not recommended fro city or congested traffic use because it is hard to get a valid check because of the mandatory requirements such as: Estimate speed of vehicle Release beam Observe target speed in target window Corellate patrol speed with checked speedometer Minimum 3 second check Constant tone No vehicles within 200M BEHIND the target vehicle and if satisfied that all of the above has been done and the speed estimation corellates with the target speed, issue the TIN. It is easy to see why mobile radar has become the lazy mans choice of traffic enforcement!!! (the vast majority in NSW) (If I sound bitter it is because I am) Real traffic enforcement is going after the fundamental traffic offences such as seatbelts, phones, Stop signs, traffic lights, not using indicators, tailgating, not keeping left on multi lane roads, etc- Pony Vs Goat

Sorry- Speed Camera Defence!
How would it work. The laser beam is basically a light that travels at the speed of light. The speed is detected off the object it is reflecting back from. If the LIDAR is pointed at your vehicle, the operator already has your speed! Stationary speed cameras work off an MPHOMETER. Next time you drive past one, have a look at the road surface. You will see three lines marked into the road. They are the sensors that detect you as you drive past and determine your speed/distance/time travelled over the sensors. These work in addition to the radar head mounted next to the "Flash for Cash" camera. How can you interfere with it apart from regulalry destroying the camera boxes and the radar heads (as some civil dispobedient people are wont to do.)- Favourite Cars
The car used was a 1969 Dodge Charger. The 69 had the split grille, the 68 had the wide grille and the 70 had the 68 grille with a chrome surround around the whole edge. The 68 had bullet type tailights wheras the 69 and 70 had long tail lights. The engines used in the General lee wree generally 383 B series big blocks but the definitive General Lee was a 1969 Dodge Charger with the RB series 440 Magnum, 4 bbl Carter carb and a 4 speed Nu Process manual into a Sure Grip SD. NASCAR racing originated from Moonshine runners hence the General Lee being built the way it was by Bo and Luke Duke- Favourite Cars

Well you certainly won;t see me or anyone else with commonsense out doing HWP duty anymore.... Have gone back to CIB....at least Detectives are committed enough to do a job properly and not get baffled by the bull that the propogandists spin to keep the status quo.... It has been a very hard slog lately...........- Be Safe On The Road
Been a bit scarce lately.....I won't go into details, but some of you who know me, know my view on how to properly Police traffic!! That view is vastly different to the corporate view and as such, the machine will always crush those that stand in the way. Now as it is Christmas I implore those sensible XR owners out there to heed some sensible advice!! Wear your bloody seatbelt! Dont talk on your 'phone whilst driving Dont drink and drive Stop at Stop signs! Keep a gap between the car in front and ALWAYS look ahead and anticipate the traffic! If you come across the ( vast majority) of HWP guys that only flip out radar tickets, make sure that you take note of the number of cars within 200 metres behind you (rego numbers) and other things such as bends in the road, distance between you and the HWP car etc! If you think the ticket was unjustified have the matter heard at Court as is everybodies democratic right. If you get hit by a camera for some stupid speed like 63 in a 60 then take it to Court. Remember the Australian Standard on speedometer accuracy is 10% so you could be doing 66 or 54. I certainly do not advocate exceeding the speed limit...it is there for the lowest common denominator but be very wary. It is very easy to write out a radar ticket instead of doing 'proper' Police work and actively seeking out traffic offenders! Have a safe Christmas everybody Ciao Grant- Pony Vs Goat
Having had a 2001 Mustang Cobra, there is no way I would take a Monaro over the Mustang!!!! Not just for outright performance, but looks, dynamics, chassis communication etc The Mustang (Tickford enhanced) is a bloody good car and craps all over the 2 door Commodore.- SS vs XR6T
Yes Dr you are correct. Back on FF last year, the previous editor of Motor posted the details of that accel time. It was a one off time done by Jonathon Hawley (I think it was him) and hasn;t been replicated. Even though I disagree on continuing to use that time for accel figures, I can see the other argument that in fact the car DID achieve those figures as it was a case of a perfect launch, perfect weather conditions/tyre pressures etc etc etc.- Are you a ricer?
Naturally I got -30% and a Racer X I like the test Though if the 1984 Chevy Caprice had been a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner with a 440 Six Pack and painted in Hemi Orange/Sublime or Plum Crazy, I would have picked that instead. Though a 1978 Dodge Diplomat with 440 Police Pack would be nice.....Yee Haaa...Sherriff Roscoe P Coltrane- Fitness and Weight loss
Ken I saw a programme on Channel 9 the other night..You are What you Eat. If the sight of the disgusting food and the quantities that the English family they depicted ate, then you would be encouraged to start thinking about the crap that goes into our bodies. The sight of the truly obsese 16 year old boy and the 14 year old girl was gross.- Fitness and Weight loss
Yeah, been better Have been very busy with combined crises That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger At this rate I will turn into the Greek legend 'Atlas' I certainly have a mountain on my shoulders- Fitness and Weight loss
Excellent work Ken My current fitness regime is weights on every other day with cycling/running on the in between days. I cut out the beer (as I'm no longer doing SPG work now) and my diet consists of tins of beans at lunch/dinner and WeetBix and milk for brekky. I am 'almost' an Adonis though I think the number of scars from numerous injuries/operations may me look more like Frankensteins monster- Who will win on Oct 9th?
