Can you machine the housing to fit the GTW turbine? Or is it always a new setup

I haven't done it myself so I can't speak from experience.

The bloke who is modding my stock turbo had reservations about the amount of material available in the turbine housing to fit the gtw3884r wheel.

  2. The draw back of the ford turbine housing when looking for more fresh air (from the compressor) is the size of the wastegate.

The gtw is not bolt on and neither is a gtx. The gtw needs more fitting by far.

With the modifications required, although not excessive, coupled with the lag a gtw would bring, one would seriously need to think about staying with a gtx35r or modified gt35r even if the slightly larger power figure is tempting.

  3. Good points there.

The gtw should make more power according to numbers and figures but as mentioned the compressor wheel has the drawbacks of being old tech.

There are other reasons not to use a gtw turbo but google can provide those reasons to interested people. It did for me.

    "Is the cost difference worthwhile?"

Decide how much power you want, your dollar per kw and what will achieve those goals.

  4. Maybe I was getting confused with the previously decided 66 mm comp wheel?

I decided against that, because, from my calculatoring the compressor would be too big for the combination of the stock turbine wheel as well as the internal wastegate.

I almost went gtw3884r with adapter but at twice the cost of a stock upgrade as well as having a stock motor and driveline I chose the lesser path...for now.

If I was to buy a gtx35r outright, I wouldn't. I'd go bigger but that is just me.

  5. That is what I'm currently doing.

My stock turbo has just shown signs of being worn.

I had a spare external gate gt35r so I used the core from that, added a gtx wheel and machined the 0.7 comp cover to fit the larger wheel.

With a flapper job and other small mods  for the larger compressor it will come in at less than a grand.

  6. Wmmfg today? My young fella has got a cold and climbed into our bed at 5:45am coughing and snotting his head off.

That sucked but when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, so I got up and cleaned the house.

Feels good that most of the cleaning is done today.

Plus it's Friday so I'm pretty sure a real beer is on the cards, none of this home brew muck.

    Warning long post...

I know this too well. I'm a full time stay at home dad to 3 kids. The oldest just turned 4 and the other two are 16 months and nearly 3. My life consists of making food, changing clothes and nappies, doing dishes, washing and other house work, school runs now that the oldest is in kindy a couple of days a week and having dinner ready every night cos my wife works full time.

    I'm also our household mechanic.

I have been doing this for just over 4 years and now it is kind of easy. I only say easy cos I'm used to it. In reality I'm up around 6 every day and don't finish my dad duties until 7 at night. Then it's cleaning for half an hour or so, a couple of hours of netflix and then bed.

Occasionally one of the kids will need attention in the middle of the night cos they kick of their blanket or need to go to the toilet. It's even better (sarcasm) when one of them is sick or better still when I'm sick. Apparently there are no "sick days" when you are a parent.

It's crazy how much of your pre parent life you give up to have kids.

It will get easier for you, just hang in there.

P.s A glass of wine or vodka can definitely help out in the evenings sometimes!

  8. 4th paragraph sums it up.

If you don't know how it all works then save some money and get it done right the first time.

You may mess up a small thing and have it cost an extra hour or two when the mechanic has to fix it.
