Power Levels And Reliability?xr6t/typhoon..
useless replied to useless's topic in General Automotive Talk
Do the typhoons need better valve springs for increased power at say 350+ rwkws? -
The more I visit this site..the more I think of getting into something faster. I have a question on my mind..how much power can a stocker get while being reliable ? Also what mods are required to make them stronger after the max stock power levels? Stav

With a 2500 to 2800 rpm stallie I have to wonder if it matters? the butterflies switch at 3800 rpm. If I want more performance you would think the removal should result in a better et.
-
Thanks again guys. I am trying to decide on the effects of compression ratio and the different intake manifolds that speed. I wonder if the non butterfly manifolds will work well on a na car or if it will kill low down power?
-
I was going to say that but didnt want to offend anyone. The standard ba sixes put out around 140 to 150..with 8.5 they would be hard pressed to give more. But in any case my question has been answered and I am again grateful. Stav

But at light throttle does it drive well without boost?
-
Zap..I am really grateful for that.Thank you so much. That answer means so much to me....
-
How do the xr6t's and typhoons drive around town and off boost? Is the low down drivabilty as good as normally aspirated car when off boost ? All good comments appreciated. Stav

This is very nice man...well done.

Im hiring a bus and off to Melbourne we go!! lol

From memory the sixes firing cycle is in pairs. 1 fires with 4 from memory.Generally when one of the front 3 cylinders fires then one of the back 3 does too. This too would have a simlar effect. I know the throttle body has idle speed controller and the throttle stop screw also holds the butterfly slightly open. Cylinders do not fire 123456. However the constant induction of each cylinder does coincide with the sequence of the combustion cycle. The cylinders do induct front and back cylinders at the same time. As rpm increases the uneven distirbution would get worse.

The engines vacuum is not from one big hole which creates the vacuum .It is created by six. Each contributes to the amount of volume being drawn in.At the throttle body the six cylinder's vacuum is measured..not one. With the car floored and the throttle body at one end. That end will be benefiting from the total vaccum of six cylinders as opposed to one cylinder right at the end. The plenum is a sealed unit with air entering one way and having six outlets..the intakle ports.. I might have to go to grand prix ...heheh
-
Correct. Number 6 is starved. If Ferrari and co read this post maybe they will change the way they do things. The ideal plenum would run 6 throttle bodies. The standard throttle body is fitted in the middle for good reason. Not perfect but better distribution.
-
Think of it this way.As each cylinder causes a vacuum which cotributes to total manifold vacuum then putting the throttle body on one end would negate as air moves towards the back intake ports as it is travelling from the front of the manifold to the back . When the throttle is cracked open then the full manifold pressure draws the larger volume of air to the first port. The first port draws on the large volume of air coming in.The second port then takes in the leftover of port one and velocity is reduced as opposed to port one because port is not contributing to the total vacuum available at port 2.Once port 2 finishes then the air will arive at port 3 .At port 3 you no longer have the added vacuum of port 1 and 2 and so total vacuum at that part of the maifold will be less than when it has reached 1 and 2. The air will then travel to port 4 which will have a total available volume less than port 4 as the total volume will only be dictated by the vacuum of the last ports. What this phenomena means is that the last cylinder will be richer and the first will be leaner.
-
6 cylinders right? Each causes its own vacuum in the manifold correct? Where do you think in the plenum will be the strongest vaccum pulse?Where will be the strongest negative pressure? At wot for example? Will it be at the half of the plenum closer to the throttle body or the farthest away? Remember that vaccum should drop to 0 inches of mercury at wot right? Now your turn champ..
-
It is my opinion only Adam. Are their number one plugs running leaner ? When distribution discrepancies are fixed then cars can make more power regarless of their current level. Also when one cylinder varies and the car is tuned at certain a/fuel ratios then it is very prone to pinging ,detonation and engine failure. Thuis is why the gung ho tuners tune alot of cars at richer settings.Because they are scared.

Hey Greg ..how ya going? I catch your drift mate. That plenum looked like the xr6t plenums.Even though I have alot of respect for all things living I dont like the look of the log plenums. Not trying to disrespect the great warrior workshops here but I think the log plenums as a whole look like a big milk bottle!! Some mechanic woke up one day with his head full of design questions and when he saw the bottle of milk he created the log plenum. Regardless of what the experts say the crappy position of the the throttle body would give uneven distribution to the cylinders turboed or not. I would take an educated guess that spark plug number one one all of these so equiped cars would show a leaner mixture than the other 5 cylinders. This is likely why Daniel probably lunched his engine and lost power after tuning. In any case I am not here to teach workshops what they should be doing. I am a car phone installer!! I am talking about improving what we already have..making it better.

Hmm interesting question. Most guys are too scared to try this. The only way to find out is do it. Heck I might do it for fun anyway. If the plenum is done correctly there should be very good power and torque increases. It seems that people don't really know how to make them complement potential power increases from modified engines. Maybe I will give it a try for a hobby and sell them off.

Yes I remember you.I thought you were a police man. There is a yellow typhoon in your parts which is constantly checking the area.Beep next time.. stav

As a young bloke I owned slow cars.Very slowwww!! Hehe the station wagon is a daily driver.I use it for work, holidays and family. People look at me funny but I know the car is pretty good. I saw your tyres last night Brian. Youve got alot of power/torque.You need to try some mt et streets. For a few hundred dollars more you will be better for it and crack faster times.. You dont need burnouts. You need tyres champ. Stav
-
Thanks guys.I was really hot when I ran those times.Really hot!! I can't wait for winter to hit get a better time and maybe get into the 13 second bracket.track temp was 40 degree and air temp was 25!! We were sweating it out!!

My last dyno read 141 rwkws and last night the wagon pulled a 14.301 At 97 mph. I saw BCL there last night and it was being pushed by around 5 mechanics to the start line..I hope he didnt break it.. How will he get to woolies?
-
l the wagon pulled a nice time tonight..14.3 @ 97mph!! I did see bcl down there getting pushed by about 5 mechanics to the starting line.I hope its not broken!!

I am sure they have a certain reliability. However they are sold with figures on the lifespan .For me I would need to replace it every 2 years as advised by the sales lady from their company..Yes I do alot of driving. I do know that removing the long belt to short belt on many cars does give similar power results as you have mentioned.
