There was a story on Today Tonight which had tests with cars that showed cars with 10% Ethanol not only got better KM's but better for the enviroment and better for our cars.

At our local United Petrol station they 10% ethanol and today I filled the tank

I hope this doesnt bite me in the ass

dynowog and extremeF6 were talking about this the other day, one of them should be along soon.

In short though I dont believe it harms your engine unless you let the fuel get stagnant.

I go through fuel quicker than I drink diet coke "No I am not poof" so I dont think it will get stagnant.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I heard a tuner the other day saying that BP unleaded with ethanol actually has the octane rating of about 95 ron. He said they can't actually measurer the octane rating of ethanol because it's an alcohol.

Does this sound right? Ethanol is known octane booster after all.

I don't use ethanol in the xr6t but I use it in the territory and there is no probelms at all maybe better economy and up here 95 is 2 cents cheaper than normal 91 octane unleaded so I save heaps.

I have also researched this topic recently.

It doesn't damage the car if you are using it regularly.

Ethanol is about 105RON and they have to add corrosion inhibitors to the mix to prevent it damaging your fuel system. By adding these inhibitors is how we get down to 98RON. There was mention that you shouldn't let a tank of ethanol sit for long periods because it could seperate back to the nasty ingrediants.

There is a claim that it will give better economy and it is better for the enviroment.

Vehicle emmissions on ethanol are less than for conventional petrols. BUT

IT IS WORSE FOR THE ENVIROMENT, THIS IS A KNOWN FACT.

The cost of power and machinery to make ethanol is more than the savings enviromentally. This means that there are more emmissions from the electricity production and fuel used to harvest and convert the sugar cane than the reduction of the emmission from the vehicle.

This is why you don't hear John Howard pushing the fuel as an enviromental alternative, because it isn't.

ColinT. Can you explain where you obtained the information on the RON rating? What about regular unleaded with a 10% ethanol mix, what RON rating would this be equal to?

Thank you guys I have done 100 kms now and all seems good. My trip computer seems to go up and down like a yoyo but I'm not sure if this is the fuel or its just started because it wants to.

The engine isnt pinging. I have given it a few blats here and there and it seems to idle with no problems.
