I do recall some very recent spirited debate over the T5 and T56 between bcl and Peter from APS over the suitability of the T5.

From memory, bcl has a T5 (or remnants of a T5) that struggled with his mods.

Suggest you do some more trawling for those posts which included a lot of info on the strength etc.          Or you can debate it here again..... simply take one can of worms and a can opener........

Yes, there was a bit of debate.

I hold the view that if you have a manual and go to stage 3, say over 300rwkw or 700NM torque, then you should budget for a gearbox upgrade, as the T5 won't last, as the torque is well beyond the specified manufacturing limits.

My opinion is contrary to APS.

The APS statement last Saturday was "as long the right clutch is used the T5 should be OK".

Upon pulling the gearbox down my T5 gearbox had a warped input shaft.

The T5 gearbox of Turbo4lt, who recently fitted the APS stage 3, is making very similar noises to what mine did (at around 310rwkw I think; maybe he can elaborate), and we can see how his T5 lasts if he chooses to keep the T5.

I believe there is another T in Queensland running similar power to my car, and it's T5 is gone, and a T56 is being ordered also.

Really at this stage there are very few upgraded manuals out there.

Of course, with abuse, anyone destory a gearbox, modded or not.

Brian

Hi Brian

In reply to your post , yes my box is making some noise, however its a bit early to jump to any conclusion as to the casue. My car has always had a slight whinning sound and its definately got worse since the upgrade which is at 330rwkw but its stabilised for the time being.

Before I blame the power upgrade I need to tear the box down and do an inspection, as there are many things that could casue these problems. As I mentioned in the previous post there was a car at Ford that was making a louder whinning noise than mine and was standard. Maybe you are right and its the T5 that is failing (hope not lol) if that's the case Ill look at some other avenue.

I have drained the oil from the trans and passed through a filter and there was no metal in the oil , the next stage is to pull it out and inspect it visually.

One consilation has been that the box no longer crunches into 5th gear no matter how fast I change it :smilielol:

Hi JB

At the moment its making noise in 1,2,3,5 and it gets quieter when it warms up, it made this noise before the mods just not so loud. It was scheduled to be changed by ford due to the 5th gear crunching but now it wont crunch into 5th gear :(

I guess I have solved the 5th gear crunching issue just get yourself 330rwkw and it goes away.

Cheers

 Yeah I know, But as indicated I am trying to get the facts out. From the clutch perspective I am not too worried, as I have a family member that does all the targa, and other various race cars. However it's more the internals. I am not looking at stage 3 but if I fit the injectors, exhaust etc, similar to Phase 2 I am looking at 250-280rwkw, hence my question.

I think Brian (bcl) may have found the limitations which seem to be about 300rwkw. Bcl did your dearler do the pulldown or did you have to cough up for it yourself?

I know anyone can destroy a gearbox, but I suppose it's like I said with using common sense.

Had you done many hard launches and or quarter miles?

JB,

My box was OK before the upgrade.

Gearbox problems after dyno runs, before I drove it, and the problem got worse as time went on. Also hard to get into gear.

But my requirements are a bit different, as I plan to take the car to 400rwkw (or beyond stage 3 levels), so I budgeted for a gearbox upgrade anyway.... it just happened a bit sooner than I would have liked.

At the moment I'm very happy with the T56 & clutch.

To answer you question about 250-280rwkw, sorry, I can't tell you. It may well depend on your driving style!

Frank,

Probably best to get your box checked. See if it is the input shaft, and if so if it looks similar to mine.

400rwkw :smilielol:

Hmm maybe some sponsorship from a tyre dealer may be required

So Brian if I am correct you upgraded your T5 to a T56?

Yes; 400rwkw should be achievable, beyond that is a lot more expensive, and perhaps with some loss of drivability.

Tyres are not cheap, and unfortunately I can't rotate my wheels.

Yes I run a T56.... I had a good thread on it, but it was removed by the mods (hint hint mods)

What are peoples thoughts on upgrading the trans oil to something like Redline Shockproof?

Anyone done it? I know in my rex it made a differnce to the feel of the shift.

Hi

I was running the shockproof in mine and the shift was about the same, at present im using Transmax Z and it shifts alot better than the standard stuff ford put in it .

Cheers
