Hi Tim,I think Cro's suggestions make sense. In the uniden handheld range the UH-075 is the best you can get.5 Watts power, claimed 12km line of site, realistic conditions 4 - 5 kms.The UH-044 is the next one at 2 watts, claimed 8km line of site, realistic 2 - 3Then the 1watt uniden range, will get you about 1 - 2kms.The little 500mw units claim 3kms, but will only see you get a couple hundred meters.I recommend the 2watt unit, then move up if you require. I personally went for the 5W because I wanted the more powerful unit for cruises. Plus Dick Smith had them on sale at the time which was an added attraction. However, I paid retail for the mic and cig charger. I think you need the cig charger for the longer cruises as the battery can go flat easily if you're transmitting alot, especially at 5W (though you can reconfigure the UH-075 to be a 1W if you want to save on battery). The mic is good because it is easier to hold (less weight).
