crap y did I read this thread lol I have all these same problems described lol engine light came on when car is at idle it shakes whole car side to side runs bit rough without revs lol. then driving up my drive way it stalled so I started back up big cough of smoke now I have a nice tapping noise in the head lol, is it possible to skip a tooth and change timing causing valves to open and hit piston head?

If it had skipped enough teeth for the pistons to finally make love to the valves after years of sexual tension you would have huge mess on your hands, literally and metaphorically, eg your engine would not be running.

Stop driving it and take the car to someone who is capable of diagnosing the issue. Do you have white or black smoke? If it is black then you are very lucky, sounds like an air leak, sensor failure, if it is white then I hope your pockets are deep.

only smoked the once after stall up driveway I have started it again in the garage and it runs ok rough idle just a lovely tapping noise inside. went down and had a look at the timing chain guide and its identical to the pictures above broken top on left side anyone know how to check if it has skipped teeth I saw a photo someone took of there engine all lined up just cant find it again. harmonic balancer notch and the cast line and the 2 yellow chain identifers isnt it?

I've heard of a few fg's with piston/valve contact that were still running. One with bent valves. Another with minor evidence of contact on the pistons.

Ribby a rough way to check you should have 8 links between the marks on the tone wheels which should be pointing at 12 o clock. Pretty sure the cams dont need to be locked in the full advance position when checking this way. The proper way to check is to find actual TDC with a piston stop and use a degree wheel. Those marks will only line up every 36 rotations from memory.

You will need to know a lot more if you intend on fixing it yourself. If you do find an issue take it to a reputable tuner for repair.

yer went and rotated the car only took 8 revolutions so I got lucky there lol the marks and yellow links all line up ok my tuner is 400km away so I might be getting a car trailer I guess thanks for your help barnz
