Well I was so looking forward to my first foray onto the Autobahn, no real speed limits, hoo yaaa. Well that reality came to a crashing halt when I find out that the only car I can get to hire in Belgium on short notice was a Peugeot 205, argh. So I think well lets see how the Pug handles the top end. Now one thing I noticed on the Autobahn is that everyone gets out of the fast lane really quickly and people are only in there to overtake, it works really well and I found that even when I had the Pug wound up much better cars in front would clear the way, so there was no worry about slowing down at all. On the straight I get the Pug up to 155 top speed flat to the floor there was nothing else in it... But here comes a massive downward curve, time to push the envelope. :censored:

My friend took the picture and I did manage to hit 180 all be it briefly, the thing shook like you wouldn't beleive and the tires, sheesh seen bigger ones on a bicycle, but there you go the land speed record for a 1.4L Pug.. Or course after pulling back into the middle lane I was passed on one side by a Merc at 230ish (my guess) and on the other by the Eurostar (Europe High Speed Rail) at 330ish, it has done 500 on a test track.

On the way back at some 3am in the morning I was getting used to being passed at 200+ by Mercs, BM's and the like but something came past so fast I was unable to tell you what it was and my estimate would have it travelling somewhere on the high side of 280....

Needless to say next trip I am getting in early for a better beast and a new record....

Regards

GJ

PS. Do not try this at home

I can't wait to get back to Europe to get another crack at the autobahn too.

I was over in Germany in 1997, and managed to borrow the team's Opel wagon - Can't remember what year it was built, but needless to say it was an old heap 4 cylinder, probably an early 80's model.

Driving from Dusseldorf to Venlo, over the Dutch border. 5 lanes of autobahn.

I sat flat out in the wagon on about 90 mph.. (with Chief Engineer Scotty yelling out...." Capn, I canta give ya any more!") I was having a ball. Legally flat to the floor.

I remember looking in the rear vision mirror and seeing headlights way in the distance behind me. within what felt like a couple of seconds only, I was absolutely left in the wake of an AMG kitted Merc, hotly followed by an M3 BMW and a couple of Porsches. They were absolutely flying..... well in excess of 250 kph !

I felt quite deflated after that.

But next time..... mmmmm Would have to be a Porsche, methinks.

cause they don't have XR6T's in Europe (yet!)

Go the 'bahn!

I hired a Merc 230SLK Kompressor in 2001 and drove from Berlin to Bremen via Hannover and back (1000km round trip)! Very good drive (only 147kw) but on the top speed runs I got to a max of 260km/h indicated. The Speed limiter did not kick in - it just ran out of puff. They are supposed to be limited to 250km/h so I suspect that the speedo was at least 10-15km/h optimistic.

This car was built for the autobahn. Very stiff chassis and exceptionally stable at high speed. It had ESP and traction control which I could not turn off.

I'm sure that my T would be much much quicker but I'm not sure it would be as stable while cruising at 220km/h than the Merc was.

Needed a lot of road, and light traffic. The Germans get out the way. I was trying to keep up with a Jag XKR at one stage, at over 220km/h.

It was great fun and felt entirely safe when cruising between 140km/h to 180km/h.

I hired the car from "SIXT" via the net, from memory it was about A$200 a day.

Planning a trip to Europe with SWMBO later in the year. Does anyone know where you can hire a Boxster or similiar in Germany for less than A$300 per day?

Yeah love driving in Europe, makes alot of Australian drivers look terrible!

Probably could get a very long topic going here on australian drivers, however the main difference is that drivers in europe are aware of their surroundings, and the outside lane is only for overtaking, let people in whenever you can!

The XR6T is stable at 220 kph! And you do NOT need too much road!

( errrr, of course, this is based on feedback from our NT readers , ah ha :censored:;) )

When I was in Germany in 1996 one of my uncles drove me and my brother from Ulm (inbetween Stutgart and Munich) to Wuppertal (near Dortmund, Dusseldorf in the Essen Ruhr area) in a early 80's Nissan Bluebird hatch with a deisel motor. He sat on 180km/h consistantly during the whole trip (about 500km's or so). One memory I have is him saying to me "Wait.. Have a look at this one" and a seriously body kitted black merc (buggered if I could see the model) flew past like we were standing still. Awesome stuff.
