8.8 Diff Conversion

Featured Replies

#1

Decided to update the diff in my BF ute so going with an 8.8 ford diff. I ordered my 8.8 this arvo and it should be here later in the week. I'm thinking of using the AU BW ends on the 8.8.

Pros:

Cheap

Lighter than 9 inch

Strong enough to run 7's

Parts availability

Discs standard

31 spline standard

4 inch narrower

Cons:

C clips

ABS probably not compatible

May not be LSD standard

I'll put up some pics when the diff arrives

Cool substitute. Wonder if a Detroit centre is available.

Everything is available. This is what 90% of street/strip mustangs use in the States

Never seen one before, do they use a 3rd pinion bearing like the 9 inch with the bolt on pinion section to the housing?

#5

How much coin? Sounds like good thing, never looked into them.

They're basically the same as a Bw78 just bigger. The donor diff is free as I have a mate with a wrecking yard. They only came out in Aus in Ford Exploders

Anyway, the 8.8 arrived today

According to the tag it's a 3.73 LSD :)

The diff has an offset pinion (which I was expecting) and, due to it's shortness, will be close to the spring mounts once I shorten one side. Plan is to fit BW ends and get some billet axles made up. The 3.73 is a long way away from the factory 2.73 which is a concern, even though tyres are going from 25.3 inch height to 27.
