How important is the move from Falcon's rear wheel drive to the Taurus front or all wheel drive? Not so much, now that Ford has confirmed the next generation Mustang - due in 2014 , 50 years after the original - is to built in right hand drive.

Ford wont officially confirm local availability of the new pony car. Insider though, say, it's a certainty to hit local showrooms , probably in late 2015. Even if , at this stage , word is the RHD cars will be turbo- fours or V6 and not V8 needed to satisfy Aust demand for high performance versions.

It is said that the V6 , will be a 3.7-liter, making 227kw for a respectable 13.9 second standing 400 meter pass.

Respectable, if not close to the current monster 485kw Shelby Mustang.

Two door or not, it's the new Mustang - finally with standard independent rear suspension - that Ford sees appealing to many traditional Falcon XR6 buyers!!!!

Why not build both - V6 for the masses and the 485kw for all of us !! Done!!

I would be happy with a V6TT making 300-350 at the treads. Ford seriously needs to look at what they want to replace the XR6T as if only a V8 was offered I would be seriously considering if I want to get another ford

Steve Pizzati (TopGear Aust) was heard on the radio today stating ' intel from Detroit Motor Show confirmed that we will not see a Aust produced car - Falcon beyond 2016 '

Ford probably has the best range of small to medium cars on the planet and a brilliant RWD platform in Falcon, however the cache of the Ford brand simply isn't there, which translates to poor sales and even worse margins.

Rumor has it that Ford is aware of the above and is about to develop an up market halo brand al la Lexus, AMG, Acura, Alcyone, Infiniti, M, Arbath etc in order to boost Ford's credibility in the middle class car market,... which if you think about it is now pretty much anyone who does not own a hypercar.

Apparently the chosen cars will share the same front-engined, RWD architecture and will consist of the new lightweight IRS/RWD Mustang, and, a new large RWD platform lux/sports-sedan/hatchback under the Lincoln brand.

Given enough Australian Government funding into the project, where do you think the new moderate volume IRS - RWD platforms could be designed and built so as to ensure American levels of reliability, performance and low maintenance costs, and, European levels of handling...?

I'm positive this is the same for the Expensive Daewoo Late model camira as well.

It's here until at least 2016 I believe. After that I'd say it's a safe bet that it will be given the chop.

Yes - you are right - the family car is doomed across all factories .. Expensive Daewoo stated that their new VF - will cease by 2016 .

It's old news now - An all new Mustang replaces Falcon as Ford Australia's hero muscle car from early in 2015. Ford stated it is desperate to establish Mustang as is rear -drive performance champion .

Initially , the Mustang will launch with a 6speed auto, with some variants offerin 6speed manuals . Engines are largely carry over 60 degree, DOHC , 3.7 litre V6 @ 230kw, the 5.0 litre 32value, 320kw Coyote V8 and a potential fo the near 500kw 5.8 litre supercharged.

At this stage I am staying married to the RSpec - and I expect in time with talk to the good folk at KPM and add some nice pits to find that magic 400kwrw . love the idea of a new 2.3 supercharged, intercooler , snout and tune. Wahoooo!!!!
