Also if your depending on this for a living make sure the payment for any large stuff you get involved in isn't 'on completion'.. I made that mistake when I first started.. Hedged alot on a big job and was getting a lump sum payment at the end.. Lucky I had a few smaller jobs to keep the missus happy :-p

Mackay.

Get into alarm systems, most years I pump about 250k worth of work through up there and have to send my boys up from Brisbane to do it. Data on its own is a dying industry considering most sparks get their Open Registration during apprenticeship. NBN will be big but heaps of blokes are skilling up for it - and it will be finite. Once it's in, it's in.

Thanks mate nah this is more a challenge my self kinda thing. Have a permanent Job would just like to expand a bit. Wouldn't mind being able to say I have a successful small business at 22 ;)

I know what people are like and how dodgy they can be. No way will I do a big job without a decent sum up front

To be honest I didn't even think about that! I know your not supposed to advertise and I haven't even settled on a name but I guess anyone in South Sydney / Wollongong knows where to come to if they want decent work done now!

sorry mate, your name must be Mackay or something. I get all excited when someone wants to work in Mackay who has half a brain and hasn't yet been caught up in the mines.

consider a small business course at a community college type thing. I did one after I started my business (sparky/data) and there were a few helpful things.

Accountant not always necessary as Panda said, just be prepared to do some homework or get your missus to do it if she works in any sort of finance job.

let your business grow organically and you'll never have to chase work. 5 years now for me on my own and I'm already able to pick and choose my work. I.e. if something sounds even remotely too sketchy or potentially unprofitable I just politely say no thanks.

the alternative is advertising, chasing work, putting a few guys on to do the work, losing money when you go quiet. Don't read "e-myth" style books lol. I've seen guys with this notion of "getting off the tools" equating success - don't buy into it. If you want to head a company of tradesmen, then study business don't do a trade certificate.

haha sorry old_mate, yeh last name is Mackay :)

Sucksqueeze, Your right, and you sound like you have done all the right things! I intend to be the head of a few blokes, but not the 'boss' who sits on his arse. more the boss who does the work and asks his workers to help if its too hard for the one guy to do and treats everyone as equal if they work to my standards. I will be looking to advertise, to seed the business then let the work come to me once my name has a reputation. Your position would be ideal, where I can pick and choose.

Jetsnot, yes people have to make money but 2k for a fuse box upgrade? sheesh :/ haha.
