Extra Power Sockets

Hi all.

I'm planning on adding a few extra 12V ciggi power sockets to the car.

Ive already spliced into the factory socket and hardwired in my mobile phone handsfree.

Plan is to add another two concealed in the centre console, and another in the boot.

The two in the centre console will be running my soon to be installed uhf and a remote head for a seperate scanner.

The boot mount will be running the scanner itself.

My question is, would it be ok to just splice all four sockets into the factory one, or should I source it elsewhere? Maybe with some higer gauge wire from the fuse panel?

Im about to install a factory reverse sensor kit I scored on ebay, so the interior will be in bits anyway (I have to run the tow bar loom).

I figured now is a good time to run the antenna cabling and sort this out while im at it.

Its like using 4 double adaptors on 1wall socket,, it will get to hot and short circuit/melt..

You could use the 12 volts from the cigerette lighter or other source which is switched on and off with ignition, to switch a relay and just run another power from the battery this would be the best way especially if you want to run a large fridge unit in the boot at some stage.

if you run too much you will just keep blowing the fuse

Thanks for the input lads.

So what I will do is run a cable direct from the battery to a relay. That relay will be switched by accessories. I'll mount the relay somewhere behind the dash, then split some cables from it to the centre console and boot sockets and earth them to the chassis.

Sound about right?

I'm guessing an in line fuse will be needed. What amp should it be? And what gauge wire should I use? Shouldn't need to be the thick stuff the blokes running subs and amps need will it?

Really depends on how much current the devices will draw combined. If the fuse is too big it will have to much tolerance and could start a fire. I would say start with a 15a and go from there.

Yeah sounds like a good plan to me mate that's what I would do especially with a fridge or something in the boot that big, the standard wiring is so thin its not really large enough to support something like this.
