Electrical Gremlins

Hi Guys,

I have a BF II F6 typhoon and I love it, but its starting to do wierd things electrical wise and hopefully someone here can shed some light on what I can do.

I bought the car around 8 months ago and when I got it it started perfectly. In the last 2 months the car has had trouble starting. It culminated when stuck out the front of autobarn my car wouldn't start. I got a battery pack and started it and got a new battery put in and that seemed to make it better but it was still not a smooth start. I've had the battery for only a month now and the car still struggles to start sometimes.

Another wierd problem is that when the car struggles to start sometimes when it starts and I drive off the speedo will not register speed.

I am just wondering what you guys think the problem could be. Not sure where to start, starter motor, coils, spark plugs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

also the car has been tuned and also has process west 4inch intake and intercooler and has not since been retuned. Could this be the cause?

Sounds like either battery is running flat due to current draw,bad earthing to engine or starter drawing too much current. If you have the intake setup,where is your battery and how is it wired up?

I agree, probably just a loose battery terminal or poor earth on the chassis.

I thought that at first too. When I put the new battery in I checked all the terminals on the battery to make sure they were on well. I have the battery in the front bar under the intake, its a process west setup. I'll admit I havn't checked the ground where is the main grounding point?

I think there was a TSB for the earth cable from engine to chassis not grounding

properly sometimes or something.

It's on the drivers side, and goes from the engine mount to the chassis, directly

below the fuse box.

Make sure it's got a good clean connection (no paint/dirt etc) and take it from there.

Edit. Forgot to say the main earth's in the fusebox. Can't hurt to check it too.

A second earth strap is a cheap 'mod', might be worth checking the batt voltage with engine running, then with lights on and engine running. My auto sparkie did this after crimping the final few terminals for me when I did my batt relocation to the boot.

He said the falcons have a smart charge system that is regulated by the computer, it saw my alt making 13.8v, a little less than the 14v 'ideal' voltage. I know the mondeo has a common fault with the alternator crapping itself and draining the battery, anytime,anywhere.

I friend of mine has a BF XR6T and sounds something similar.

I've been reading around to see what it could be as I got the phonecall last night about it so I went around to investigate.

History, new battery last week as they were stuck thinking it migh have been the battery, last night it wouldn't start.

You turn the key and it the dash lights turn on and off then die with the (!) light on and fading away?? and the modular starts bipping like a fast indicator noise at high speed and then the car is dead no dash lights no power what so ever.

Very confused.....any help guys I thought it may have been alternator.

nick d that def sounds like an earthing issue, ashturner id suggest a new starter motor, heat soaked windings cause massive current draw which can do all sorts of sh*t, on fgs mostly the a/c stops working because the him modules supply voltage drops below 9v but BFs can do anything including what your describing, and do go el cheapo ebay they are no good

We've had a look around and checked a few of the fuses.

The dash board flashes intermediately with loud clicking sound with the different warning lights flasing when you turn the key to accesaries without enagaging to starter motor.

The clicking sound also resinating from the fuse box and what I believe the throttle sensor (TPS) battery is not dropping when starting the car.

Got me really puzzled, has anybody had any issues with the ignition module?

Any info would appreciate heaps.
