Hi Stall Kit

Hey guys,

can someone explain what a 'stall kit' or 'high stall kit" is?

I've read many times of people having these kits in autos, but I'm not really sure what they do?

and what are the benefits/detriments?

Stall kits in autos increase the efficiency of the torque converter. As I recall they used to cut the inverters down to make them smaller in the old days.

Are they worth it on street cars?

A Hi stall actually drops the efficiency of the torque convertor, it does this to allow the convertor to slip which is why we can then get a higher stall speed.

Many modern Hi stalls in late model boxes still retain the lock up clutch which means at light throttle low load driving at higher road speeds the convertor will still lock up and be as efficient fuel wise as the standard item, but fuel economy will suffer in all other driving situations because of the slip.

Mine has a 2500-2800 stall. My guess as previous owner wasn't sure. I've been thinking about going to 3500rpm. Just to add a little more fun. Anyone else have a 3500rpm stall in their ba turbo? How have they found it?

Is it mainly for drag applications? Would I benefit from this kit in my n/a?

Mine stalls to 3300 in a ba 4speed mate. Lost about 45rwkw but now has rediculous amount of torque!!! Gets shocking fuel economy, but lets face it, I dont think that is what your after! Mine staarts grabbing when it comes on boost (22psi) and I wouldnt have it any other way now. Also had a 2800 lock up stall before. If ya want a silly but bloody fun car go for it!!!!
