Thanks 1axr and exr6.

I think that this is probably the first, safest and least expensive positive performance change that can be made to any car.

My XJS (yes, a mobile heat exchanger!)gained approx 12 rear wheel hp just from this.

Mr Walker,

Filtration is another good subject, but it revolves around the number and sizes of the particles that the filter traps.

Paper (most standard elements) "clogs" up more quickly as the particles build up on each other and block the filter media. Filters are designed to block a certain amount of particles above a certain size, can also be described as the Beta ratio. I need to find out more.

As far as the ECU working, if the ECU cannot detect any faults, then it will simply adjust the signals according to the information it receives. In other words, if it "sees" more air and the temp is OK and the O2 sensor is OK, then it will simply give the engine more fuel. More air + more fuel = bigger bang = more grunt.

This is of course provided that the numbers it "sees" are within its' operating tables. Bit like the MAP sensors on some of the older N/A engines. If you put a blower on them, the MAP sensor wouldn't recognise the positive boost, so the engine just ran lean cause it couldn't get more fuel.

I'm not a computer whiz, but I think that's what happens if you just try o overboost the stock setup, hence the need for different computer bits.

There must be someone who can explain it better than this?

DAVO YOU EXPLAINED IT JUST RIGHT THAT IS BASICLY WHAT HAPPENS. that's WHY WHEN YOU FIT A LARGER COLD AIR INDUCTION UNIT ON THEY GO HARDER AS WELL.(SHOULD HAVE MY NEW COLD AIR INDUCTION ON NEXT WEEK ) WILL POST RESULTES WHEN FITTED)

SUN-EX PERFORMANCE : BA 4.0 TURBO BMC REPLACEMENT FILTER $165

Copy from bmc website http://www.bmcairfilters.com/index.asp?IDLang=0

PERFORMANCE

BMC air filters are designed and produced to ensure a higher air flow than original paper filters. In F1, for example, BMC cotton filters minimize the loss of air flow pressure passing through the air filter; this way ensures the best conditions for full exploitation of maximum power. Therefore the benefits of replacing the original paper filter with BMC cotton air filter, produced using the same technology and materials as the F1 air filters, are evident.

DESIGN AND MATERIALS

Qualified engineers using advanced software and expert technicians using the latest technologies produce BMC air filters. An F1 filter must be very light, must be made of the best raw materials and must improve performance. For this reason we use only alloy mesh with epoxy coating to ensure protection from petrol fumes and from oxidization due to the humidity of the air. The filtering material is composed of a special cotton gauze soaked with low-viscosity oil to give you the best air permeability.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

BMC technical staff has developed a particular production system based on soft rubber moulding which produces the familiar BMC red filters. They are made in one single piece with no welded joints in the corners, thus avoiding breaking risks. This system, called "Full Moulding" comes from R&D in F1 and it is significant of BMC air filters' technical and quality specifics.

I have fitted a BMC panel filter in my stock airbox and love it.

Made the stock XT V8 intake sound as good as my mates XR8 intake.
