Are you using an anti static lead when servicing the Zf trans, I remember when I was doing my time at fraud I we had to wear and anti static strap around your wrist and it clamped to the chassis, apparantly the Transmission module is quite fragile. In the same token Ive seen exhaust shops welding and stuff like that with the batter still connected and no surge protector on the battery and everything still seems to be ok

no I dont, the advice I received from vacc before doing my 1st one was earthing was only required if you were to do anything major to the transmission, eg start removing valve body etc!

as for welding with a battery - that's one thing im always nervous about! - ive seen the end result of a merc battery not disconnected when being charged! $12,000 worth of modules damaged - only available through MB!

this is interesting also

http://www.valvoline.com/products/consumer-products/automatic-transmission-products/automatic-transmission-fluid/37

I rang Valvoline technical previously and they said they dont have a fluid for the 6spd auto's - Valvoline Website says there maxlife meets the SP requirements? might give them a call back tomorrow and get some more indepth details!

this would be great for me as we use Valvoline in everything at work, other than the 6spd auto's - only drum of castrol in the joint!

that and we can buy max life for about 1/2 the price we can buy transmax!

You sure Mercon SP is the 'spec', because the Nulon also meets this, and DX VI . If the spec is Mercon SP and the oil meets it then warranty claims cannot be void by using the not Fraud $11ty oil crap.

I can't seem to find if Transmax Z is (Not sure why Castrol doesn't want to make all this info available easy? I'm blind maybe) but no doubt it if the others are.

Interesting is the life claims. 75,000 miles so 120,000kms on the Valvoline. Download the PDF for Transmax and it's 100,000km for heavy duty use, or 300,000km for highway.

So I'd guess any of the full syth top shelf are designed for long term use.

It would seem quite a few people are pouring $coin$ litterally through their gearbox on here. I've heard of people changing it every 15,000kms!!!

doh, wont let me edit my thread, but it appears you are right. I just re read this link http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1829808 in my previous post. So if this it he case and Mercon SP is the spec, then all the paranoia about running not $rip off$ oil really is null and void.

I didn't think that the nulon was up to the task when I started asking questions.

but if you want to try I have a heap of it sitting in my shed in unopened bottles - I went the transmaxZ

I spoke to our local Valvoline rep on Thursday, who said that the aussie maxlife is the same as the US maxlife dex/merc, he said while the oil meets the required specifications - it hasn't been certified by ford/zf for use under warranty as they want ridiculous amounts of money for the certification which Valvoline refuse to pay (same as castrol)

so I will be giving maxlife a trial in my own box when I do trans in a fornight once I get back from holidays!
