Rust Repair In Ba Boot Help

Featured Replies

#1

ive got rust along one of the welds in the boot of my ba,

the previous owner had just painted over it and I was to stupid to notice but its been coming through the paint over the last few months I wasnt really that worried, until this morning when I was in the boot doing stuff and I seen the rust from the inside for the first time, looks alot worse that I thought! :(

anyways im after some tips to fix it? im pretty noobish when it comes to this stuff. the only way I can think is to sand back, galv paint over it then use touch up paint over the top?? or is there better ways?

it feels abit brittle from the inside to even sand back though.

help appreciated, cheers.

Any good rust converter should do the trick,

Scrub it down, apply then prime and paint.

Seen a thread on this before-seems common for b series. Do as mentioned above, don,t try to get to invasive in the joint as its a can of worms you don't want to open, - its sealed well on top of the lap anyway. Seem to recall the concensis was the lap was sweating, causing the rust.

I have rust about to be fixed under warranty (5 year rust warranty for those who can still claim - correct me if I'm wrong) in that smae spot. Mine is fine on top (may 2007 build) but rusty underneath...water drips in from there too :/ Hopefully they fix the bugger!

anyone with a b series should check this area. mine had it as well. if you are lucky enough not to have it then I would do some preventative maintenance and get some sort of inhibitor into the joint. if it has taken hold I would see a panelbeater. rust convertor is just a bandaid and who knows how far back into the joint the rust begins. want it fixed properly. cut it out.

Let me guess RHS of boot???? had my BF done under warranty twice...went to panel beaters first then had the back window popped and re sealed PROPERLY stopped leaking after that....

I'll have to keep the window seal fix in mind chippa!

Mate rust is killer

as a panel beater I do heaps of rust repairs, thing is usually what you see aint all that's there.

Probably best to see a panel shop but the process is...

Grinding the rust off, following the rust under the paint (if it has spread), after all rust is cleared apply a rust inhibitor of some kind, prime, paint. Shouldn't have any problems after that but as I said probably better to take it to a panel shop as it gets pretty tricky as a home job unless you've got the right tools.

But as for your problem I had boot rust around my spoiler didnt notice until it bubbled under the paint, I went for an entire boot replacement to a BA XT boot (No spoiler holes) but in most cases easier to just get it repaired.
