Problems After Fuel Pump Install

Featured Replies

I had a walbro pump installed.

the car now runs out of fuel with a 1/4 of a tank left, the fuel gauge reads correct because when I fill it up it only takes about 40 litres...

anyone had this issue, or know what the problem is?

That is a bit confusing. Are you saying the car stalls and wont run when the guage is at a quarter?

If so-

Did you replace the top hose to the pump yourself? If you did and made the hose to short it would hold the pot that the fuel pump sits into up and not extended all the way out reaching further to the bottom of the fuel tank.

The pot compresses on the top with the rods so if the pot isn't fully extended it will be held up more from the bottom.

Strange thing is though that I thought the sensor was in the pot itself so it would read correct even though there is fuel in the tank! if you get what I mean?

that's right, I actually ran out of petrol with a 1/4 of a tank left, the gauge reads a quarter (and I have a quater in the tank) but the car starved and stopped!

I used the corrugated plastic hose that came with the fuel pump, ill have to check if its too short, I didnt think it was though...

It SHOULD be all ok then! You've filled it up again as you said so how many times has it done this or is this the first time?

How did you get to the petrol station or did it start and run again after it died as there could be a leak from that hose or dodgy wire connection?

Just fault finding here...

ive had it like this for about a month, ive just been filling up before I get to a quarter, and it only ever takes $50 woth of fuel

it coughed an spluttered 500m to the servo when it happened!

also, the pump whine gets louder when it gets close to empty (1/4 tank)

thanks for your help by the way....

Pump whine getting louder would probably be because its not sitting in the fuel at that stage so would make more noise not being muffled by submersion, plus if its lacking the fuel the pump may be getting hot from running dryer.

Best to pull it out and check it all over if its a sedan that's an easy check otherwise if its a ute then, Diiirty...

The problem is that your pump is not sitting down properly in the surgetank, its too high, I had the same problem when autotechnique put my fuel pump in, I ran out at of fuel at half a tank ..go figure that one out.

After they fixed it itll still gulp air at qtr tank, so I pulled it out, and found the filter they used wasnt letting the pump sit all the way down.

Now I run out of fuel with 20kms to empty going by the trip computer. :-)

Doesn't the pump actually clip into a holder down in the pot so cant be fcked up?

When I fitted mine 3yrs ago I couldn't fit the filter either with it as it was the wrong one so just I cut the filter part off and used the plastic right angle part from the filter that attached to the pump!

I couldnt be bothered reading the whole post ......

but ask yourself this if your car runs out of fuel at 1/4 of a tank at what point is it leaning out the engine facepalm.gif

id be pulling out your fuel pump asap and see why its not working as it should I can you tell you I have a walbro installed in my car and ive driven down to 10km to emtpy once or twice when ive been unable to find 98 octane only slow of cause as I dont wish to blow my motor from it running lean under throttle

as for how it all fits I cant remember as I done mine years ago but if the fuel gauge is still reading correct it has to be your pump not sitting correctly in the bottom of the swirl pot in any case remove it befor you need a new engine and a new fuel pump

cheers trev
