Ok, so recently on my way to work I noticed a noise from under the hood which kinda sounded like loose metal jingling around in circles. I lost nearly all boost and in the end decided to get the car towed home.

I knew the sound was coming from the turbo so I took it off and this is what I found...

A bit of history, had the car tuned to 310kw. Tuner didn't notice that the hot side intercooler pipe was loose the whole time. One day I get under the car and see it's nearly hanging off so I tighten it. Suddenly car has HEAPS more power, especially down low. (Hard to get traction, spins them even at 100km/h, revs like mental if you flat foot it - 7000rpm!) Obviously, this didn't seem right so I took it easy, didn't thrash it until I could get it back to the tuner. But didn't have a chance to take it back before the turbo decided to give out.

Mods in sig.

What are people's opinions?

More than likely if the hot-side pipe was partially off the turbo has been working overtime to make the boost level your tuner wanted to see, overboosting to that level has possibly fried the bearings in your turbo...

it was running ok for a while especially when I jumped in it after you fixed the hotside piping, my bet is oil feed blockage, or too much preload on the actuator bud

Fried bearings is what I was thinking too. This problem happened only a week after I fixed the piping.

Also, I've blown into the oil supply line and am finding it very difficult to get any even a small amount of air through it. Will be getting an aftermarket line and serviceable filter before installing new (or reconditioned) turbo.

Does it look like I'd be able to replace the internals on this baby?

Ok, turns out the problem was the turbo wasn't getting enough oil. Another victim of the crap oil line filter. I've always know about this common issue and had it in the back of my mind but never did anything about it, that's a big, expen$$$ive regret. Everyone needs to regularly clean the filter or replace it with something bigger.

Where did you get another turbo from, and how much?

Fair bit of shaft play there sh*tbmxrider, mine only had about 2mm side to side. Got my turbo repaired in the end. If I pick it up and install it and I'm happy with it I'll let you know who did it.

The filter is located in the banjo fitting for the oil pressure sender/turbo feed line on the LH side of the block.

The sound you are hearing on shutoff is the residual pressure of the aircon bleeding through the aircon restrictor/expansion bleed. It is located in a hexagonal crimp in the condenser out line right near the ECU. Try turning the engine off with no aircon selected.
