Engine Dies

Recently purchased XR6T 2003 Auto 82k - Engine would break down when "booted" - replaced coil packs (gen ford) & plugs, cleaned t/body, lubricated boost controller, changed fuel filter, air filter ok - this solved the initial problem, however now the car goes really well, but brakes down at higher revs under full load, then when I back off the engine coughs & splutters for 20 seconds or so & returns to normal, has even stalled on one occasion - can anyone offer some assistance

Sounds like valve float. If it is you will need to take care as this can cause engine damage.

To much power and running standard springs. Remedy, stronger valve springs. Are you running stock power?

Again this is only speculation.

I think that the engine is standard, however as I have no experience with these engines and have no comparison/reference, BTW just took it for a run the problem seems to be getting worse - engine is great when cold really very strong for 3 -4 Ks then breaks down at full load, then back off engine seems to be running on 3 no power after 3 ks of gently driving waiting to come good had to pull over, @ idle rough, sort of missing (no mechanical engine noise) quick rev comes good however engine seems doughy after that - coolant temp just under 1/2 on gauge hmmmmmmmmm what can it be, I would have thought valve float issues would not persist for this length of time, what are your thoughts

Valve float only lasts for 20-40 secs. Take it to a tuner or ford and get them to check for error codes.

do you think it could be VCT actuators I didnt think ba xr6t had this didnt vct start in the bf mk1 ?

fuel pressure it wouldnt hurt to check fuel pressure since your fuel pump is old and there is a little filter at the bottom of the the pump that can clog up with crap

when you say it runs fine when its cold does the engine rev all the way to red line with no issues when cold and then after a few km of driving start to run like sh*t ?

if so im guessing you have an electricail problem somewhere maybe as the engine heats up the resistance is increasing somewhere (crappy sensor somewhere maybe ? )

also when you replaced your coil packs did you put the little rubber things that hold them down back on top of them ?

the fact it only does it high in the revs range it still sort of sounds like coils a little bit to me also if you have multi meter id test your coils again also check to make sure the plug that plugs into the coils is in good conditon and not dirty rf broken also make sure the spark plugs are gapped correctly

Thanks for the info, I will check these things out, appreciate the help, BTW VCT Infinite over 60 Deg - standard on BA Mk 1 XR6T, could this be the issue?
