I have a whirring noise coming from the front of the engine, sounds like a small electric motor.

The whirring increases and decreases in sound as the revs rise and fall.

It only starts after about 15 minutes of constant driving and fails to do it any time I book it in to be looked at.

If I switch the aircon on it amplifies the sound by around 50-75%.

On long trips it is driving me crazy, anyone had something similar? Or have any ideas on what it might be?

Thanks in advance.

If I had to guess, that's what I think it sounds like.

I don't know why it takes 15 minutes+ to start making that sound though.

belt idler or tensioner pulley.

It gets louder when you turn the A/C on because of the increased load.

Ok, thanks for the info.

Now I just have to convince Ford to look at it, damn noise vanishes anytime I go near the place.

Power steering pump?

That may explain why it doesn't do it for the first 15 minutes or so.

Once the oil's heated up it may make the noise you're describing.

That makes sense but I don't think turning the aircon on would amplify the sound as much as it does.

It does sound familar to the sound I used to get in a wrx I owned and that was a split o-ring in the power steering pump.

Thanks, I will look into all of these possibilities.
