May 4, 200917 yr #1 hi guys , me and my brother are putting in a new clutch in my bf t ute this friday and I was wondering if there is any tricky things to getting the box and clutch out if any of you guys have done it befor . looks pretty straight forward just wanna know if there is any snags or problems people have pulling it in and out , cheers .
May 4, 200917 yr #2 Try and get a bung or stopper for the back of the box where you take the tailshaft out, otherwise you are gonna end up with Dexron3 everywhere and it stinks! And remember to drive like a grandma for a while after the new clutch goes in, you don't wanna give it a caning and destroy a new clutch...
May 5, 200917 yr #3 Don't forget the box is bloody heavy so the higher you can get it in the air to get comfortable underneath it the better. Before reinstalling the box make sure the clutch has been aligned properly as well. If the clutch plate is slightly out of whack you'll spend ages trying to get the input shaft to go through it and if you force it you can bend or break things which may cause the whole assembly to become unbalanced.Unbalanced clutch at 5000rpm can spell disaster and be very messy.Good luck.
May 5, 200917 yr #4 Author ok cool , yeah im useing a four posta , so hight ant a problem , I was just wondering about the clutch line , has that got a quick release coupling or sum thing on the out side of the bell houseing or up near the fire wall.
May 5, 200917 yr #5 not too sure about the quick release, but if u take the whole slave off the side of the box u shouldnt need to bleed it provided it all stays together. I would go to coventrys or some place like that and get a clutch alignment tool, theyre cheap and nasty but they can make life alot easier...my personal fave is to find a gearbox (same type) that is completey buggered B.E.R and cut the input shaft off and use that as an alignment tool, these will be alot easier to use than the cheap nasty alignment tools. or if u can find a cheap input shaft that's been preloved, cut that down.
May 6, 200917 yr #6 The slave cylinder is inside the bellhousing so no easy 'take it off the side' approach.
May 6, 200917 yr #7 you will need an input shaft to align the clutch if it is a twin plate.I also recommend removing the gearbox from the bellhousing while it is all on the car, much easier than getting to the bellhousing bolts with the gearbox in place.unclip the clutch line from just below the master cylinder. you will need a bleed as the fluid will come out.
May 6, 200917 yr #8 Author yeah I thought that sounded abit funny , my s13 I had , it was on the side and easy as hell , but the clutch line goes into the bell houseing on the XR , not sure where to disconect it from . any ways il prob find it all out when its up in the air .
May 6, 200917 yr #9 Author ok cool cheers guys , a big help , il let ya know how I go on friday , im also putting in a herrod short shiffter while the box is out .
May 6, 200917 yr #10 my bad, havnt worked on one of the new fords yet, everything else that I have worked on has had the slave mounted on the side
