Had problems getting 5th gear without "crunching". Felt like buggered synchro's. Also had a real scary thing happen a month or so ago - Accelarated from standstill and had the throttle go wide open (with no input from the pedal). :nugget: Fortunately speared me up a layback kerb median strip with no damage to me , the car or anyone else. Ford dealer kept the car for 3 days and then tells me "it can't happen". IT DID HAPPEN! My question is, has anyone had a similar experience with the throttle? (I've also had the thing fail to respond to the pedal on several occassions) and has anyone had this gearbox problem.CiaoCFlat

That could mean you are flinging sh*te, but I DO believe you. Why? Because I had a similar problem on my old VX Commodore - throttle would (intermittantly) stick on, and the only way to stop the car was to (1) pray to God that whatever was wrong would fix itself or (2) turn off the engine. After several trips to the dealer, they discovered I had a frayed throttle cable - which meant that if I depressed the throttle past a certain point, the frayed bits could (not necessarily would) catch and hold the throttle in that position. Scary stuff indeed.Never had a problem with throttle not working though . Maybe yours is an ECU problem, and not mechanical .My 2c.

Good point- could always be a gremlin loose in the electrical system. What was that saying? oh that's right- never say never!

New gearbox is stuffed, less than 1000km after fitting. Same thing, crunching into top gear. Diagnostics mechanic says they have "had a little trouble" with the manual turbo box. They are gonna let me know when they have another new gearbox for the ute, and we'll give it another shot!Oh well, at least I won't wear one out! CFlat
Redhawk ....Time to lay this fairytale aside...... Legacy Donating Member 2,657 Member For: 23y 6m 26d Gender: Male Location: In the Ferry on the River Styx, not getting out just yet! Posted 25/08/03 05:54 AM Posted 25/08/03 05:54 AM Cflat,Thanks for that I have got a similar problem but it is intermittent, nanny driving its not bad but go through the gears quickly and it crunches in 5th. Will be following up with my dealer.

Maybe a poll to see if it's an isolated case?If it happens again, take it to two dealers. If you're not satisfied, ring Current Affair.... They'd love it.
CFlat Member 54 Member For: 23y 1m 16d Location: Canberra Posted 25/08/03 12:22 PM Author Posted 25/08/03 12:22 PM Silverhawk,Just like mine - slow deliberate changes are OK, but a bit of a squirt thru the gears and slip it into top - "crunch". Mechanic says Ford reckons that "short-Shifting" (3rd to 5th) can contribute. Why would you do that? And if you did, why can't the gearbox handle it??Does it know what you did - and is wreaking some punishment upon you for your weird driving habit? If your's is behaving like this, it ain't an intermittent fault - it's stuffed!Ask your dealer to replace it, Id be interested in the answer.CFlat
CFlat Member 54 Member For: 23y 1m 16d Location: Canberra Posted 26/08/03 12:06 AM Author Posted 26/08/03 12:06 AM Dealer called this morning to let me know that it will be about 2 weeks for new box.Seems top gear synchro ring is brass, while the other 4 are a "clutch-type" material. Mechanic thinks the special synthetic oil used in the turbo box may be "too slippery" for the brass synchro ring. The non-turbo uses the same synchro arrangement, but doesn't use the $20 per litre synthetic oil and doesn't seem to have the same top gear problem. Maybe they'll change to a different transmission oil - dunno!Let y'all know when it happensCFlat
