r32 is a little overpriced for a golf, needs more horses to be half decent value for money

Gets AWD and is far more powerful.

Golf GTi would be the best in the hot hatch market unless you can afford R32.

I use VW as work vehicles - VW is a smart company who in the near future will be the # three automaker in the world - Look at the companies VW has control over and compare them to the companies GM and Ford have bought and tried to off load in the past five years , all VW owned corporates make money !! .

My T5 Transporters are 128kw 6 speed autos (ZHP44) same as Ford use in the upmarket Falcons

My Crafters are 100kw DSG , same as used by VW and all its associated brands (including Lamborghini) as a transmission choice .

DSG and its variants is the way of the future , no torque converter = better fuel consumption - gear shifts in .006 of a second is possible and full engine braking when slowing are just some of the features .

The Golf is a smart small car , the 2.0 TDI (IMHO) is the pick of them!!

I've had the opportunity to drive the Golf Diesel, the GTi and the R32 for work.

Gotta say, the R32 is DEFINITELY the pick of the bunch if you can afford it. The thing is the absolute definition of a pocket rocket.

The DSG is just simply too good to ignore. Probably the nicest gearbox of any car I've driven to date.

Something interesting to note is, we had a Golf GT on a dyno and found that it made roughly the same power as VW quoted for the GTi.

We thought it was probably a freak car so we got hold of a second GT and put that on the same dyno... with similar results.

The only conclusion we could come to is that VW is deliberately underquoting the power figures for the GT in order to sell more GTi's.

I mean if it was my money I'd still buy a GTi as it feels so much snappier and worlds better to drive, it's also clearly a nicer package all around but in terms of bare bones power figures there's really not much in it. Depends on your priorities I s'pose.

Cheers.

My sister has a EOS, which has the same engine as the Golf GTI.

She has the DSG, and even though I refuse to drive it cause of hairdresser status of a car, the gearbox like everyone else said is ORSOME.

it shifts sooo fast in auto but it feels a lot like a real clutchless manual, unlike my 4 speed auto in the BA.

Forget the manual, and I'll tell you why..

DSG shifts faster, resulting in a faster car

DSG can upshift and downshift just like a manual, it also blips throttle on downshifts

DSG results in better fuel economy

No need for a clutch pedal in traffic
