That rings a bell and sounds like a good reason, but would the base N/A 4.0L have an oil cooler too?

Doubt it - but Ford like to keep things simple!

There's nothing in the way of the oil filter. I changed the oil today.

I think it's the same filter as the V8's use? Maybe it was just an economic decision.
