guys this topic needs some help....

the xennon globes being discussed here are marketed as xennons to (as previously mentioned) capitalise on the xennon craze...in reality by branding these globes "xennon" the manufacturers mean they throw out "xennon like" light (ie. the light is more like natural daylight and is more white/blue)

now true xennon lights (hid) don't actually use globes - the light is created by passing an arc of elictricity through a reactive gas (xennon) which burns intensly to create the white light...why do they do this u ask?...because light created like this more closely resembles natural daylight (which is white/blue) which in turn is more "comfortable" to the human eye (which has evolved to become used to seeing things illuminated by white/blue light by the sun through our atmoshere), because it is actually more energy efficient, because the lights run cooler, because they never-ever need replacing, because they can be designed into smaller, funkier shapes and designs (the cool circle designs bmw have) and yes because they look cooler

now the problem with xennon hid lights (and why they were being considered as being declared unroadworthy by legistlaters - and I still haven't heard what was happening here) is the fact that because the light is being generated by igniting volatile gas there is a problem with uncoming traffic and hi-beams...you have hi-beams on as you drive at night, another car approaches so you dim your hi-beams -> but because the gas is reactive it continues to burn even though you stop passing the arc through it - meaning the lights are still effectively in hi-beam (it takes a second or several for the intensity of the lights to return to normal)...to get around the problem some manufacturers marketed auto-dimming lights that tilt the lights downward slightly when you shift from hi-beam (or some actually are aware of oncoming traffic and shift by themselves!) to reduce the problem...others used xennon (hid) lights for standard lights only and use standard globes (with the white/blue coating so they LOOK like xennons) as high-beams

xennon (hid) kits are available for many cars but are expensive (largely due to the extra wiring and power transforming that needs to be done to create enough juice to ignite the gases)...I think bmw offers (or used to offer) xennon hid as an optional accessory at about the $3k mark on the current 3 series...

that being said I'll replace the standard globes on my car with white/blue phillips jobs when I blow my 1st factory fitted job

I wouldn't think so cj

the cops hae been cracking down on the ultra ricers with actual blue globes in their headlights - I don't know of anybody who been canaried for having xennon like globes in their car

I had them in my prelude for a while before I sold it and didn't have a hint of trouble with the law

as stated I'll change mine when I blow my first globe

Just spent two hours doing a 5 minute job. Replaced the headlight and high bema with Xenon Blues. Light output is much better.

To do this you will need:

1. Patience

2. Remove battery. did you know it has a cool air duct?. Its hard to get out as well

3. Remove air filter.

4. Remove clips on back of bulbs by squeezing bloody hard

5. Replace globes

6. Fight with hard springs in plastic headlights that move when you put tension on the spring

Other than that its a piece of cake. I havent owned a car where it was so bloody hard to do some basic maintenence!

You will need:

h4 for headlights

h7 for High Beam

h3 for spot lamps.

Supercheap have them but you will probably have to order the h7's

I am going now to the first aid cupboard for some band aids...............

That Cold Air (Battery) Intake stems from the dark old days of the EA,apparently the test cars keep exploding batteries because of all the Heat soak!

DallsQLD, I was contemplating chaning my all my driving globes to Narva-Artic Blue. When I had a look at the engine bay I said that I ain't touching that with a ten foot pole. In a way I want to give it a go but from what you have advised I guess I have to get my car booked in for it.
