Using A Dyno?

We had a local dyno day here in Ballarat, was allot of fun and I got the first ever numbers for my ute (283.5kw). But there seems to be a bit of a discussion on how the dyno day was run. The numbers were down across the broad. Just about everyone’s car. Now, what I notice was;

The cars were tied down so tight, both rollers were running on the tyres.

The fan was a house hold unit.

And the cars didn’t seem to really get up on the front rollers much at all.

Does this seem weird? Should the cars be strapped down that tight? And the highest output car was 349.6kw (R32 GTR), but all the cars were strapped down. Do you always need to strap a car down? Or only on big power cars? Someone clear this up for me please.

you have to strap them down to try and prevent wheelspin on the rollers. I would say that it would be accurate, but the small fan probably doesn't help much!

Do you have a print out you can throw up to gauge the afr's etc?

Don't be silly, I just got a line on dyno sheet. There logo was bigger.

They didn't even lift the bonnet up to make sure everything was in place. Just rolled in on and strapped it down.

I do understand about the wheel spin. But at one stage they strapped a car down that tight, the wheels were rubbing on the guard. I just thought that you let the car come up onto the front roller, not jam it onto both of them. And most of the cars there were making under 210kw. Not going to make wheel spin I thought.

well obviously rubbing the gaurd is a bit too far, have these guys had a dyno for a long time? If they are doing a full power run without keeping an eye on AFR's is a bit risky, too bad if your car leans out and pops a leg out of bed!

It's a safe head sex tune... But this should have been set up too.

But these guys have had the dyno for awhile I think. There was a comp there a couple of years ago too. Not sure if the same thing happen then.

Can any of the site sponsors reply, and let me know how they run theirs?

I was always of the understanding that you dont want it riding to far up on the front rollers as this will give a false reading as well....

naturally if a car is making power even if its strapped down tight it will always climb up on the front rollers,cars have too be strapped down tight on a dyno,loose straps will give a incorrect figure so what ever the cars made that's there true figure,but I agree with senna t a small fan wont help the situation either.All cars need too be strapped down bigger hsp car might require extra straps for safety.
