Press the clutch in and it goes away. You hear the whine slow down when selecting 1st, but take off the whine becomes really loud. You hear the same slow down whine into 2nd, then again loud, same again into 3rd, then once again really loud, then when selecting 4th, no noise at all! But once you go for 5th, the whine comes straight back. I have had the box in and out a few times, had every bearing replaced, had the shafts checked with a dial indicator, changed the oil, had the preload and end float tolerance set different specs, and nothing has changed. Before I got someone to start working on it, I contacted ford, and they told me they could fix it but it would be between 1800-3000 to get done. I asked if ford would help cover the costs, but they said no because I had not had regular servicing with a ford dealer. Can anyone tell me at what service do they service the gearbox? I decided to get a local mechanic to do the work for me, he contacted a few ford service techs, they helped at the start, but now they are telling him that this noise is normal in all 5 speed gearboxs.Does anyone have, or had, this problem, is there anything I have missed out in checking or changing?CheersRuby Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/38477-5-speed-box-whine/ Share on other sites

I am sure Trade practices and the MTA would be interested in their statement as it is incorrect. If you have not had it regularly logbook serviced, then you will not have a good chance. As for the whine, I think you might find it is the clutch throw out bearing as it goes away once the clutch is in. I am a bit rusty with my mechanics, but this is what I remember. The 5 speed is a crappy gearbox at the best of times, as they are under specced for the T. RubyXR6T Member 22 Member For: 18y 7m 8d Posted 21/09/07 12:31 PM Author Share Posted 21/09/07 12:31 PM If it was the clucth throw out bearing, I would expect it to be noisy with the clutch pressed. Also, there is no whine when in forth gear, when in 4th, the input and output shafts are rotating at the same speeds, so when in another gear or in neutral they will be turning at different speeds which is when the noise starts, this sorta hints it must be inside the gearbox.I might head down to ford tomorrow, and take a manual for a drive and comment on how quiet the box seems to be. See what they say, ie. make them eat their own words. Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/38477-5-speed-box-whine/#findComment-576987 Share on other sites

The T5 will need a complete rebuild or you will need to consider a T56. They will take it out and send it to someone.Spoke to the local mechanic, and he wants it back, sounds like he had an idea he wants to try.I've got still no idea on what it could be, I have got some different psi tunes for it, but the thing does it even with stock tune, unfortunately im starting to come to terms with it being in the gearset. In other words, gonna hurt the pocket.I'll try get an audio file up so you can hear it. Im telling ya, strangest noise ive heard, and for alot of other people might I add.To throw another one in, when I lean on the gearshift, makes a whine as well. Its a different note, 1 &3 to 2&4. (moving it forwards and backwards...) Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/38477-5-speed-box-whine/#findComment-577941 Share on other sites

Lucky dip with these cars, but Fraud will tell you it is normal and the so called experts, wont give a straight answer either so go figure??
