I ran into trouble last night at wsid.My wagon had no traction. What can I do to the rear suspension to keep it on the ground and launch the car better. Shocks? Bars? All suggestions appreciated. I suppose the leaf springed ute owners would be a big help here.

Well, you have to consider the tyres you are running. Trying lowering the psi at the track to enlarge the footprint. Look at getting wider tyres next time you're due for new tyres. Maybe spend a bit on a quality tyre. Buy some semi slicks just for the drags if you're so inclined.

I'm assuming it has no LSD? I'd be finding a wrecked XR6T ute at a wrecker and get the diff out of it. The BA Mk1 utes had a 3.46 final drive. I think Mk2 had 3.73, if same as sedan.

Are you getting tramp? Better shocks will solve that. When you find a diff, grab the shocks while you're there. Then if you still tramp look at aftermarket shocks. Konis for example.

EDIT: You could try adding some weight over the rear axle also. Couple of bags of cement.

I had a good 300kg's in the back of mine last week. Didn't do anything for traction. lol.

diff ratios in the ba's are 3.45 and 3.73 for the mk2's

I read that and thought to myself, 'Isn't that what I just said??'. Then I reread my original post. Stupid brain...

Yes, ofcourse, it is 3.46 and 3.73, not 2.46... :stirthepot:

So is your problem axle tramp, or just wheelspin?

If it's wheelspin you definitely have to get a LSD.

If it's tramp then a good set of shocks will go a long way to fixing it.

Remember that as a general rule the more grip the tyre has, and the stiffer the springs, then the stronger rebound you need to apply to your shocks. This means an adjustable style shock like the Konis are going to be your best option.

Also with an auto it is important to stall it up on the line while you're waiting for the lights because it get some rear squat happening - putting some weight onto the rear before you leave the line. The main thing that causes tramp is the sudden rebound of the spring after it has been shock-loaded into compression as you floor it. Take some of this shock-loading away and you alleviate some of the tendency for tramp.

I did make an error. My bleeding air pressure gauge was wrong. Being the good samaritan I lent it out to a few blokes. When it showed 16 psi it was actually 7 psi so I had to hit the brakes half track because the car was all over the place.

I do have an lsd,4:11 diff ratio and mt et street tyres. I was a bit too anxiuos last night and my best run of the night recorded my best 60 footer,330 footer and 660 footer.I was heading for a 14.5 pass(pb) but the timepass board died..Mind you it is an au six wagon na. This last run was my only run with the correct pressures. For axle tramp what shocks are good?
