Bottom End Strengthening

WHen someone says they are streghting there bottem end. WHat is involved in doing this?

I ask as I've got a mk1 t5. I"m already at a disadantage with the t5 which I have planned to get replaced with a t56 but also being a mk1 I'm investigating the bottom end. Might be worth my while to do this and give myself a saftey cushion as I'm looking for a power figure north of 250 and being very reliable . Wish I had a BF :spoton:

thanks in advance for the help :w00t2:

On a BA Mk 1, the biggest weakness is the conrods.

The pistons are OK for power to 320-340 rwkw, provided the engine is tuned sensibly.

To replace the conrods, the engine has to come out, and the pistons removed from the bore, which involves removing the head and sump to get to all the bits and pieces.

When this is all apart, you will probably as a minimum also change the valve springs.

It can all be done pretty easily, but you need someone who knows what they are doing.

Cheapest option for the power you are chasing is a set of F6 rods (which are also used on May '06 and later XR6T's, or alternatively, you could get Atomic rods or similar, but this will be at greater cost.

Atomic also supply strengthened complete bottom ends.

Hope this helps :spoton:

Best to phone them, as some changes have been made since my last price check!

to do your t56 conversion and bottom end you wont be seeing much change from $11-12K.

id trade her on a MKII or BF mate it will end up cheaper by 5K or so!!

which is the conclusion I came to a couple of days ago... I was going to do my bottom end but decided that in the end I would be better of sepnding X amount on bolt ons for this car and then in 12 months time upgrade to a phoon with the stronger internals and take all the bolt ons of it and put them on the new car.

so no new bottom end now :roflmbo: but will be fitting new cooler and pipe work, a plenum, pod, relocate battery etc etc, actuator, surge tank and new brakes... this way it will look the goods but I wont lose my money on the internals come trade in time in 12 months

TL is right, to do the bees knees built bottom end your lookig at around $7-8K... then add your T56 on top of that... another $4-5K (im guesstimating but doubt that I am far off)

T56 all said and done will cost about $8K with an upgraded clutch kit.

I couldn't be bothered going to all of this trouble. I think I'm gonna keep my pennies for when I'm finished with the mk1 . Just makes more sense money wise, then I hope the tornado here we come ;):msm: I've got 2 years left with this one but whos counting

SO I might as well ask this now. With the BF onwards. How much stronger are they over the BA. Conrods weakpoint in BA, what about the BF with the phoon internals. What power are the good for before you have to start replacing innards

cheers in advance for the help :fool:

the BFs will spit out 380rwkw SAFE.

anything over that is a gamble, 400 could be had with a VERY SAFE tune....
