$3000 To Make It Legal

Hi everyone,

I really hope some of you could help me out here.

I own a GT Falcon which is the car of my dreams. I am in a wheelchair so I am unable to really look at all the technical stuff, for example brake pads and so on and rely heavily on the ford dealers to tell me whats going on.

I took my car in for a 30000k service today however I got some concerning news.

I couldn't go and drop it off or pick it up as I can't get on a bus to come home so my wife dropped it off and picked it up. WHen she got home she has shown me a receipt for the work done today and then a quote to make the car legal again.

Apparently I need two new callipers, two new brake pads and two new tyres. All up for this to be done would be $3000.

This car is only 30000k's old, I never mistreat it, I never drive it hard (as much as I would like too) and look after it.

Is it possible that the brakes are gone after this amount of time? I told them that the brakes were squeeling to which they told me that it would just be that they are dirty as I haven't washed it in a couple of weeks. Also would the tyres be worn by now? They were rotated at 15000km's and now apparently they are worn and I shouldn't have even got the car back today. If that was the case then why did they give it back to us.

Can anyone help with previous experience. Has this happened to anyone else this quickly.

I don't know whether to believe them or not. My wife said they spoke to her quite rudely about it.

I did a search for brake topics and noticed a lot of people have had brake problems, but surely they should last a little longer than 30000km's.

first things first take it to another dealer, get a second opinion. If they spoke to your wife rudelly tell them to get F***** and find another dealer.

what about your warranty? ran out?

I have a minimum 3 year warranty on the car and it is no where near 2 years yet.

My wife was told that it was geuine wear and tear therefore my responsibility.

Sounds a bit steep :hiwelcome: Is the GT a BA or BF ?? and did you buy it new ?

If it was second hand there is a chance that the previous owner enjoyed a few skids

Anyhow my last Phoon a BA with premium brakes still had plenty of brakes left and still a reasonable amount of meat on the treads after 30 000ks. It was driven reasonably hard,I liked the wheelspin in second at ~80ks

As Stang said , a second opinion wouldn't hurt

Its a BA and got it brand spanking new.

I am pissed at the price and the thought they might be screwing me over at the same time.

I drove my XR6T that had the premium brakes (same as a stock BA GT) and tracked it a few times and after 20,000km still had 50%.

Unless you are dragging the brakes while driving I would be very suprised if they needed replacement.

That being said, to also need the calipers replaced, could indicate that the brakes are dragging and has caused caliper damage and worn pads.

Are the hand controls ajusted properly ?

As for tyres, are they the fronts or back ?

It is not easy to rotate the FPV wheels as the tyres are directional and cannot be moved front to back due tot he offset. To properly rotate the tyres, they need to be removed off the rims.

I would get a second opinion.

Thanks for all the help guys. Its fantastic.

I don't need hand controls to drive so that isn't an issue, the hand brake doesn't even work, its really loose and I got sick and tired of paying $45 for them to tighten it to just have it loose again a couple of weeks again. SO the hand brake is not an issue. I don't ride the brakes or anything like that.

The dealer just rang me to explain and he states I need two new tyres, two new discs and two new pads.
