Truck Tyre Recaps

Travelling into Melbourne towing a 10x6 furnature moving van at about 100klm/hr on the freeway behing two semi's.

I see the 2nd semi touch it brakes then I see comming from under the semi a full length and width of recap rubber. Can't get out of my lane due to traffic. Lift the foot off and wait to hit it. There was a lot of rubber on the freeway I guess because of the hot weather lately.

After hitting it and bangs and thumps from the front too the rear of the car I travelled onto my destination. When I pulled over I feared the worst. The front rh corner of the bar had come out where it attaches to the gaurd, was able to spring that back into the slots. Lots of black rubber marks on the front bar and the rh side skirt.

Picked up the load and headed home. At home out with the polish and all the rubber marks came off. Very small dent on the front bar leading edge. BUT looking at the rh fog light it had been pushed back but not smashed and still works. Booked in to have the mount replaced after christmas.

Looking under the car there was a rubber plug knocked out and more rubber marks on the rear bar that also polished off.

In a way I guess I was lucky with only minimal damage.

Arnt tight ass truck drivers the reason why our freeways are littered with shredded tyres. Re-treads should never be allowed on any vehicles.

If his tyres shred and damage your car than rpeort it and make a claim against him. No diff to being involved in a crash with the truck.

Not really a matter of them being tightarses more a fact that thats all they can afford to run, good luck getting anything out of the truck company as well there insurance companies have some of the best in the business dealing with this kind of thing daily.

I do agree though that it's wrong there allowed to run these re-caps and I'm suprised there hasnt been any kind of fatality directly relating to a retread exploding off a truck....maybe we just dont hear about it.

I'd hate to be in the lane next to a B Double and have one explode beside my left or right ear....

I wouldnt take there insurance companies head on, I'd being do it through my own where they do all the chasing and get paid for it.

Re-treaded tyres delaminating have gone through car windscreens in the past. Chunks of rubber weighing a full kilogram being hurtled through the air at 100KPh does some damage.

Looks like you did pretty well just to get off the way you did. Lucky it didnt wack the bonnet or windscreen.. Then you would have been in a spot of bother

alot of truck caps that you see littered all over the roads arent remoulds/recaps, their proper branded tires at the end of their lifespan.

And were well defective and dangerously bald before they got to this stage.

What an utter load of BS. I dont know ANYONE who has seen a cleanskin tyre explode like recaps do.

while I agree recaps CAN be a pos, the quality branded ones like bandag are usualy xrayed to ensure that the tread has fully bonded and that the casing isnt damaged and likley to fail.

and to the person who said tight arse truckies, pull your head in and just shut your yap. Have you ever ran a large truck? do you have any idea just how cutthroat it is out there, especially now that its super quiet??

This isnt meant to piss anyone off, but I run a semi myself. I am fully aware of the costings and implications and etc.

Personally I will NOT run recaps, andd im fortunate enough to be able to afford cleanskin tyres, but most are not in the same boat as I am.

I know several people who cannot opperate at the low returns the industry provides currently and it is tellign in the lack of large trucks on the road.

I do sympathise with the damage done to the car, but the reality is that sometimes sh*t happens. I would be sure the truckie didnt even know that the tyre let go.

they dont all go with a bang and over the noise in the cab things arent always apparant.

Umm, then why the hell work in the industry. If you can't afford to run the truck except by putting garbage retreads on, DON'T. Not just singling out truckies, plenty of nongs driving cars that can't afford to run them, but they do and they are generally dangerous POS. And in Pigtoria they don't even have annual rego checks.
