Posted 28/10/06 05:46 AM Posted 28/10/06 05:46 AM This weekend, I drove into Darwin, everywhere you look, the Speed-kills propaganda has been posted, big electric billboards on all major roads have been erected. It makes me sick.Over the last 6 months ALL fatalities have been in zones with a speed limit..bring in a point system? Go for it I say! Tougher drink driving laws? (still the biggest killer here) Go for it I say!But there's no good reason for a blanket limit on the de-restricted zone..There are 4 bogey road trains going up and down and to get past 'em at 110, you need 2K's of clear road MINIMUM.People, if one day you'd like to legally take your T for a squirt up here, pleaase help, post your comments hereIt may not help, but It'll make you feel better....

The majority of road deaths in NT have nothing to do with our speed laws. These are the REAL reasons: overloaded, unregistered, no seatbelts, dangerous non roadworthy cars being drivenMany many deaths in the indigenous population due to the above reasons.Huge amount of inexperienced tourist driving campervans and the like (high centre gravity vehicles) over distanced larger that the entire country!A very lax' attitude to drink drivingA general disregard/no enforcement to laws such as running red lights and speeding in school zones (Only 1 speed unit in the Alice which is seen perhaps a few times a week)Huge amount of people with drug and alcohol dependanciesFinnaly another real contributing factor is the amount of pedestrians killed by cars (Again a result of people collapsing, sleeping in the middle of the roads)I drive these roads and can tell you, 140 or 150 is easy work and very safe on long open raods for a well maintained car (Such as the T's and Xr8 etc)These are comfprtable cruising speeds, These cars are also brilliant well beyond these speeds. I struggle to recall deaths on our roads due to high speed on the Stuart Hway. This is a political cop out, does not adress the real issues, speed laws will not help reduce death toll.I will be doing all I can to do my bit against these laws, Until Jan 07 though I will continue to enjoy my freedom,COP OUT COP OUT COP OUT!!
