The stock trans uses a trans cooler within the radiator..... This is OK for "normal" driving and power levels. But if you start doing brake stall burnouts, and doing some quarter mile drag racing, you'll quickly increase the trans oil temp and "cook" the oil, causing it to reduce its effectiveness in maintaining good lubrication and operation.

An aux trans cooler is also a good idea if towing frequently, or carrying loads in a ute, for example.

The ZF automatics don't have bands like the 4 speed, they use fancy clutch packs. At present, you can't change any parameters in that transmission, and they already have an external cooler
