Not sure that's quite right JB - I think rego would be equivalent to their tax disc and it would actually be our roadworthy certificate (or RWC!) that's equivalent to the UK's MOT?

Rego covers the (extra) cost of personalised number plates too at least in NSW. And the heavier the vehicle then more cost of rego (something I found going from a 1200kg car to a 1700kg T! Check out http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/ for more info for NSW rego. Just had a look and they have new metalic coloured number plates.

At the end of the day it's just another TAX. Don't know how true, but someone told me once the rego fee was created / increased to raise funds during WW2. I guess they forgot about removing it!

ahh cheers cleared that one up then

rego = yearly road tax, which in the UK comes in at 396.368 AUD

As for our MOT, has to be done once a year every year after the cars 3 years old and that test is about 100AUD, just a generallonce over the cars wear & tear, with an emmisions check

yeah, probably did'nt explain myself correctly.

MOT = RWC. But from memory we had to get a MOT done every year.

Here in SA, it's the number of cylinders that affects the cost of rego. A V8 costs more than a 6, which in turn costs more than a 4. And rotaries fit in there somewhere.
