The SSS system on the Ford does need some significant impreovement though.

The stick can be quite easily broken.....I've seen it happen.

Further, there needs to be a detent between D and N.  I have seen drivers who though they were in SSS mode, push the stick forward to down change under full throttle and they have actually shift from D into N.  Not a good thing at all.

As a matter of fact, the more I think about it the more gimmicky the SSS shift is.  It will not select a gear when you want (the gearbox overrides it and won't select a gear until a certain roadspeed thus not allowing a downsh*t to maintain a speed throught he corner)

The SSS needs to modified so that it is exactly the same type of gate that the Police Pack Falcons had before (From Park the detent would be depressed, full acceleration applied and the stick slammed backwards.  It would immediately get the car rolling in 2nd and shift back to first once the car was moving and the stick would be pushed straight back towards Drive and would lockout Neutral)

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel dumber after reading that?

Plonky, I highly recommend you either stop posting or at least get your facts right before doing so.

I've never heard of the shifter being broken. Considering it has a cast alloy rod going up the middle it, that is directly connected to shift mechanism on top of the box, makes this highly unlikely.

I would suggest you could hang your weight off it, plus some of your friends, before it would break.

Also, the only reason it wont shift down a gear is because you were probably trying to shift into 1st at over 65km/h. It won't shift because if you were decelerating this would unbalance the car significantly, applying that much braking force to the rears only, not to mention this also protects the gearbox from unneccissary wear. Also, say you suddenly wanted to go faster during this time, you would have only 1000rpm before having to shift again. By the time it shifts, the torque converter takes up the slack and you get moving, you would have already been going faster had you stayed in second.

So plonky, please, stop.

What were they doing with it then? A gym session? As I've never heard of this nor seen any evidence of it. Hearing something doesn't mean it happened. I'm not saying its impossible, its just highly unlikely and would have to be caused by say, a crack in the core, as from the manufacturer, of that particular peice of alloy.

There was definitely a post in mid 2003 about someone breaking an SSS gearstick and stating it was plastic. Lawsy, where did you read it was alloy or did you just assume it was alloy (as it bloody-well should be!)?

My mates XR6n/a shifter snapped with 5000k's on the clock...was taken back to the dealership on a tow truck. Also remember reading a review they did on the Futura on the Drive website where they couldn't finish their review of the car because of the shifter... :lol:

I got my info from waaaaaaayyyyyyy back when they were just releasing the car, something to do with having an alloy stem.

Well well, looks like that went out the window at the speed of light now doesnt it.

And yes, it SHOULD BE if it isn't. Its a gear level, you would assume it was wouldnt you.

Well maybe you assume too much - and maybe before you start making such assumptions which lead you to attacking other people's posts you should just take the time to check out some facts. Plonky was statings facts. You might like to read some of his posts throughout the many threads on this forum and you may learn something ... then come back yourself with some worthwhile input.
