To any of the techos out there, how easy (or otherwise) and costly would it be for Ford to add variable valve timing to the BOSS engines?

It seems that variable valve timing is the way to go for lots of performance engines now, and to my limited knowledge, I think this may be a way around the usual problems of having a strong bottom end, but also maintaining top end power delivery. I think its a given that both the XR8 and GT could do with another few kw, and more linear torque, so maybe this is an option???

Just a thought anyway.

Cheers.

Brent.

l am sure the Boss will gain VVT in the future. Ford have kept it back so that it can introduce this as an improvement in coming versions of the engine. The Barra 220 has VVT.

Yes the Barra 220 does have VCT. The reason that the Barra 220 has VCT and the Boss 260 and Boss 290 don't, is because the Barra 220 head was designed from the ground up by Ford Australia. The Boss engines are utilising American sourced heads which do not have the space nor are designed for VCT.

The Boss engines use the American spec exhuast cam profile, but the inlet cam profile was developed here by Ford Aust.

No doubt, in due time the Boss Heads will have VCT as made by Ford Australia - and when they do, the engines will be great! Just look at what Ford Aust have done with their OWN designed Barra 182 and Barra 240T heads!!

Pity it won't be a moderately priced bolt-on extra! :(

the 5.4 has been around for ages .... I can't recall any VCT developement

I know there has been a truckload of 3 valve head and VCT development in the modular motors (especially the 4.6) ... the 2005-6 Mustangs are coming out with this configuration

not sure how much Ford Australia have had to do with the 3 valve 5.4 development... if any at all

I'm sure I'll be put straight on this real quick ..... :flirt:

if you are a USA Ford fan like I am and know the history of these motors .... you may find it is a bit of a cheek to quote "Australian input" ...... IMHO all is from the USA parts bin .... part Lightning ... part Mustang/Cobra/CobraR .... part whatever

maybe a little cam tuning .... but the Aussie Tech books give credit to the Cobras for the cams too ... got me stumped :k24t:

The Boss motors won't get VCT until the americans introduce it to the 4 valve heads, which may not even happen. Ford Australia would not be able to design and build it themselves as it would be a massive task. The whole head would have to be redesigned to accomadate it and would need to be cast here as well. One for the too hard and too expensive basket.

As for the Barra 220 it is a wholly Ford US designed and built engine. The only development work done by Ford Oz was the exhaust manifolds and assorted packaging bits to accomdate it in the Falcons engine bay, although the Falcon was the first car to use the new engine.

Id like to think they are currently trialling a VVT BOSS motor in Victoria somewhere, ready to be mated up to a centrifugal supercharger for next years GTHO.......

Please Ford, tell me im not dreaming! :spoton:
