Police Cars & Undercover Cars Spotted Thread
Yep I have to agree with a lot of you that if you do get pulled over, the best thing to do is appear to be apologetic and remorseful. I have (on about three occassions!!) been thankful to have not been booked but let off with a warning even after doing some incredibly stupid speeds (albeit on a clear straight freeway at night). Seriously, what has one got to gain by being rude to the police officer? I would think 9/10 times a person is caught speeding, the driver is aware they were speeding, so its not in their best interest to act rudely. I think its sad case of some people thinking "the best defence is offence". Unfortunately for them, this is grossly ineffective with the traffic police. Ross

Air Fuel Ratio Meter
Turbocharged cars are generally run richer so as to keep the combustion chamber temperature down and given worst case conditions (eg high engine temp, heavy load) the engine will not ping, and thus get damaged. Although, it is worth pointing out that it is generally at WOT that the mixture is set to run rich and not at stoic. The mixture should not really be rich under part throttle. (cruise) Ross

Pinging When Towing
A question... is it pinging right through the rev range? and is it doing it under both light and heavy throttle?

Brake Pads
I use Bendix Ultimate pads on my XR6, and the only thing I find is that you need to use the brakes once or twice first thing in the morning to get them up to temp. This predominantly happens on cold mornings. I have to admit though, they also release quite a bit of dust. Other than that, they are MUCH better than the standard Bendix pads. I find the Ultimate's give a better pedal feel and are more resistant to fade. (although with a bit of frequent heavy braking from high speeds, fade sets in...) Ross

Fog Lights
Turbo6Man, no need to get upset. I was just saying that if Ken got it and noone else made a contrary post, then obviously you must have misunderstood what I was saying. I think you are confusing the the word "your" in my statement. Instead of: I'll rephrase. OK heres my 2c worth. The fog lights fitted to your car are not to improve the drivers visibility in foggy conditions. They are so OTHER people can see your car (ie. so they dont not see it and run into it) - that's why some cars also have a fog light on the rear. (ie hyundai excel ) They are situated low to the ground so the light doesnt reflect off the fog and reduce the dirvers visibility. ie visibility is REDUCED when u use your highbeams in fog. The fact that someone said earlier in this thread that they are useless in fog is a bit of an incorrect statement. As I said, no offence intended. Ross

How Does Torque Relate To Power?
Yep there is. Power=torque*angular velocity So that becomes: Power=(Radius*force)*(2*pi*frequency); where The radius is relating to the crankshaft radius. The force is relating to the downward force of the piston. pi = 3.1416 (approx) Frequency is the rpm Ross

Damn Carburretion!
I too agree with blocked jets in the carby. Swap your spark plug leads around and get it to backfire through the carby. (obviously remove the air filter cover) I used to use this trick on my old celica. Ross

Cruised With A Cbr 1000 Bike
that's right, the autos of the EA-AU were limited to 180kph due to the auto transmission. The manuals had a higher speed limit. Ross

B A G T For Auction
that's what I was wondering Mondie! The car doesnt look too bad! Perhaps the Control Blade rear end is buggered, and a diff... but I cant see any chassis damage? Probably the owner has thie kind of inurance that guarantees a brand new car if it is written off. Probably the insurance company is auctioning it off... Ross

Fairlane Outsells Statesman In July
Here in the Sunday Times newspaper in WA there is a review of the new Expensive Daewoo Caprice, and the review said the handling of the Caprice was not near as good as the new LTD. that's what I like to hear. But then again, Expensive Daewoo have always been lashed for their not-so-good suspension compared to the Falcon ever since the AU days... Ross

Downshifting In Sss Instead Of Braking
I agree with sport, the only major problem I can see is if you shift down to 1st on a wet road to engine brake, I can see the rears momentarily skidding on the road (no traction control intervention here) - I used to do this all the time in my NA Fairlane auto. By this time it could be too late... Another point though.. the warranty is 3 years on these cars and the likelihood of the transmission packing it in even with some solid abuse is unlikely to be less than 3 years normally... Most problems will only appear after the 3 year mark... So you could be left with a stuffed auto after maybe four years and no warranty :( As a few have said. Brake pads are a lot cheaper than an auto rebuild. Ross
