Ford Falcon celebrates 50th birthday in Australia June 28, 2010 2:19PM BEFORE the Opera House, before the jumbo jet, before maternity leave, before decimal currency and before colour television - before all of that in Australia, there was the Ford Falcon. Fifty years old today, the Falcon celebrated its birthday with friends and family at Ford's Broadmeadows plant in Melbourne's north. Cheered on by hundreds of workers, a series of Falcons rolled out across the factory floor, from the first, the XK Falcon, to the latest, the 2010 50th anniversary limited edition Falcon. Beaming Ford Australia chief executive Marin Burela cut the cake with Victorian Premier John Brumby and Innovation Minister Kim Carr, as workers applauded and sang Happy Birthday on the factory floor. "Falcon has been part of Australia's long life and part of society for a long time," Mr Burela said. Mr Burela later said it was "a proud and personal day for everyone in the Ford family". "Certainly I've been with the company for 26 years, I started in Geelong and I can remember my father driving his very first XA Falcon back in 1972." The Ford Falcon is Australia's longest running car model, with almost 3.5 million produced since the first XK rolled off the Broadmeadows plant production line on June 28, 1960. At today's celebrations, 50 years of Falcon models were showcased, starting with a gleaming grey XK Falcon, produced from 1960 to 1962, followed by a hulking canary yellow and black striped XY, produced between 1970 and 1972 and then an XA, which came out in 1972. A red Falcon , popular in the early 1980s, was followed by a Falcon EA and then the AU, produced at the turn of the century as an "end of the softer shapes of the early 1990s, blending bold, sharp edges with the strong robust features of previous Falcons". The final model, released today, was the new 50th anniversary model, with former Ford president Sir Brian Inglis at the wheel beside former Ford racing driver Allan Moffat. Mr Moffat said the 50th birthday was a "marvellous milestone", alongside Ford Australia also celebrating its 85th year of business, a milestone "no other manufacturer" could match. "If Henry Ford was reincarnated and brought down on to earth and was to hop into our 50th anniversary Falcon here today, he'd think he was on the wrong planet," Mr Moffat told reporters. "Because (he would have thought) no one possibly could have achieved from a Model T to what we've got today in less than 100 years, he'd think he was in Pluto or something like that." These are among the initiatives Ford Australia chief Marin Burela believes will maintain the company's fortunes in Australia. Ford celebrates its 85th anniversary as a car manufacturer today, the 50th anniversary of the Falcon and 85th year as sponsor of the Geelong Cats Football team. Burela rejects criticism that the company's US parent has not backed Ford Australia in an export program, saying its research and technology made Australia an engineering centre for the company. Ford will invest $230 million in so-called sustainable developments in Australia. These include new clean diesel for its Territory sports utility vehicle and liquid LPG injection for the Falcon, which will cut CO2 emissions by 12 per cent. In an interview with The Australian Burela said: "If we were not integrated with the Ford world, then we would not have had the opportunity to use the four-cylinder ecobooster power train. "One Ford opened the door to connect to the efficient energy capability." Ford Australia has become a design and development centre with some 900 engineers in a total workforce of 4500 people. Vehicles and systems designed in Australia are produced in other countries, such as South Africa and Thailand. Ford's total sales rank third with a 9.3 per cent market share this year, well behind Toyota at 20.4 per cent and Expensive Daewoo at 13 per cent. In April and May it made more cars locally than the other two, and this year to date it has produced 21,873 vehicles -- just behind Expensive Daewoo at 23,973 but well ahead of Toyota at 13,910 vehicles. Toyota imports most of its local sales. Car manufacturing is a tough game in Australia, as shown by the fact that while Ford has bounced back into the black with a profit last year of $13m on revenues of $3.1 billion, profit margins are razor thin. In 2008 a staff wage freeze was imposed to try to cut costs as part of a company-wide efficiency drive. Burela became president and chief operating officer for Australia after a lifetime career with the company. His first job with Ford was at Geelong, which is where the 50-year anniversary of the Falcon will be celebrated tonight. He credits the Ford training with giving him the "ability to interface at the coal face at manufacturing, product planning and development, working with suppliers' dealers and customers". Sales numbers have been on the slide for more than a decade and there are big question marks hanging over the car's future. Since the first Falcon XK rolled off the production line at Broadmeadows in Victoria on June 28, 1960, more than 3,486,983 Falcons have been sold. But while that makes it one of Australian motoring's greatest success stories, Ford Australia cannot ignore the slide in sales. Only 14 years ago the Falcon was riding high with 77,835 annual sales. But last year only 31,023 were sold. It is not just a Ford problem. Expensive Daewoo is experiencing a similar drop as motorists spurn large cars. The future of the Falcon remains in limbo. Ford's global boss, Alan Mulally, has said there will no longer be cars for individual markets. Australia and New Zealand are the only big markets for the Falcon. That leaves two main options: the Falcon could become a rebadged version of another model in the Ford world, such as the US-market Taurus, or the next generation Australian Falcon could be globalised and tweaked for markets in Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. The president of Ford Australia, Marin Burela, is playing his cards close to his chest. He refuses to reveal the fate of the Falcon, which he says will continue in its current form until about 2014. "As is normal practice, we're currently working on our future model plans, which will continue for some time," Mr Burela said. "As part of that we're talking to Australian customers about what their priorities are and our goals to deliver that."
