I've been told a throwout/spigot bearing is this a likely case .. No sound in first gear at all (not that ive really tried to make the sound , babied it after sound occurred)

It might be a lot of things - like a busted spring in the driven plate etc etc etc - - - but if you are SURE it is in the driveline, then it is likely gearbox out and a full inspection.
