Yet Another Turbo Emergency!

Hi guys,

Need some advice, had a Sydney based workshop replace the core in my turbo last week and once completed it was driven home to my house, ontop of the turbo repairs they also installed a braided line with external oil filter for the turbo

It's done about 200kms since being done and I am in the middle of nowhere, my engine isn't boosting and my engine bay is covered in oil, I can't hear the turbo grinding or screeching so I'm thinking its not stuffed yet, but I am unsure as to why it is not boosting.

I'm going to attempt to drive it home again, but curious to see why your initial thoughts are on my potential problems.

Appreciate input.

^^^^^^ The boost issue could be the flapper getting caught on the housing.

  • feeling a bit dizzy now after standing on my head to see photos properly.....hehehe

Ok just to throw a spanner in the works. I done a u turn to go back home and now the turbo is boosting again!. Still doesn't help the problem overall but I can't think why this would be happening. All the pipe work fittings appear to be intact and connected, I can't even identify where the oil is coming from?...

Ok, so had it trailered home and have just put it up in my shed and inspected it with engine idling, sure enough there is oil constantly dripping from the new oil line fitted to the car by the workshop I just had it at. They fitted the speedflow filter and braided line, it must be a faulty part or something, I dont have time to investigate at present as I need to get to sort (500kms away) but I'll give the shop a call in the morning and explain it to them see what we can work out. I dont even know when I'll next be able to get it back to Sydney to get the work done, might just be easier to bite the bullet and get a local workshop to do it rather than trailer it down there again.

it wouldnt let me post pics but above are some links to my photobucket, just pics of the new oil line and filter.

Does anyone think there could have been any damage occur during this little oil leak?... and any thoughts on why it would stop boosting with an oil leak?... appreciate some thoughts on the subject as im not a turbo guy, I am a V8 guy, straight forward and simple...like me haha.

cheers.

Glad you chose the trailer option mate.

Try to see if the oil is leaking from the oil pressure switch that connects to the block. When I got mine done I had to get new sealing washers from Ford as you can't reuse the old one as it doesn't seal properly.

Check this thread it's got the whole install step by step

Oil is leaking from the new filter they installed which is an aftermarket setup as per pics. It is mounted on the front of the rocker cover and hooked up to braided line.

I'm guessing the aftermarket filter is stuffed. I'll call the workshop tomorrow and see what they think. im just dreading the thought of getting it fixed here in Newcastle and then having the turbo go again in the near future!. think I'll just wait til I knock off and get back to Newcastle then trailer it back to Sydney to have it done.

cheers.

Should have gone with the earls filter.

If it is leaking from the filter, unscrew the two sections of the filter. There may be a pinched o ring in there or it could be loose. You could also loosen the oil line to the turbo while the engine is running, to ensure there oil at the turbo. Just loosen the line and wiggle it to check for oil. Then tighten it again. I would then hold the engine at 3500rpm so engine oil pressure is at its highest. You should see where the leak is then.

If boost is not coming on intermittently then your waste gate has to be open when there is no boost. Stick your head under the car and look. Up at the turbo charger. See if it all looks legit, maybe even take a photo and post it on here.

Take it back. It prob starved the turbo already
