Take it from a bloke who was standing in the middle of it, had 2 bottles thrown through his Police car window and ended up locking up more people than you could count on both hands.....no they didnt.

VG,

what's your theory on entering a mass mob like at Summernats in '92, is it ever a case of stay away, or must there always be attempt to regain control?

As an onlooker in '92 I perceived the Police presence to initiate the incitement to riot. Were you in the overturned Squad car?

I'm not being critical, just trying to understand how you fellas ended up in there as now way would I have driven my own car through there let alone a Police car.

5% of a crowd being bad can tarnish the reputation of the whole crowd and that goes to the police to. I heard of cops fineing cars for little things like not having the shift pattern on their gear knobs and similar petty instances like that.

some police get their kicks from being aholes! the way they target these people borderlines on harrasment. does anyone know if the summernats has a increased road toll on the highway if not what justifies the massive overkill of police pressence on the highway on the way to canberra!

Police seemed to be having some fun with some "bikers" on Commonwealth Avenue last night - around 5-6 cars to deal with maybe 10 bikers.

I don't know the details of why they were pulled up but the police presence looked like over kill. Yes they were on Hardley Driveables but not 1%ers. Just because someone rides a HD, wears a leather jacker and black open face helmet doesn't mnean they are dealing drugs or weapons.

Mind you I'll probably read in the Canberra Times this morning of a bikie invasion, taking advanatge of the police presence at Summernats to 'take-over' Canberra.

By your own admission you have no idea why they were pulled over so why comment ? It could have been something so simple as asking directions but no......it must have been harassment. RFor a person who uses the '1%' moniker so easily you have a fair bit to learn about what actually happens when Police pull bikes over (and just cos they aint wearin' coulours doesnt mean they're not bikies....lesson #1)

When one of a group gets directed to pull over you will find the ENTIRE group pulls over. This is to (a) 'look after their mate' and (B) initimidate the Police officers that pull them over. They may not have been dealing drugs or weapons (too many US TV shows for u my friend) but they may have been speeding, riding an unregistered bike, excessive noise (common on HDs with the muffler removed), riding 2 abreast etc etc. If the case is that a large group is pulled over what would u like, 1 car to deal with something that big or a bit of backup ? Maybe the group was under escort with something pre-arranged with the Police ?

If you don't know why they were stopped then its probably safest not to assume. I have pulled over many, MANY cars that looked as though they were lost, and asked them if I could help them with directions. I still use the red/blue lights to do it but the result is nothing like what you seem to assume. They get their directions and every feels good about it.

What an ill-informed comment. And you wonder why ?????

I doubt you will ever see a Police officer book anyone for not displaying their shift pattern. RTA inspectors have been out with the Police all weekend and they may (and that's a big may) point out something like that but I sincerely doubt that anyone would be booked for it

I was sitting smack bang in the middle of the whole thing in 92 so I can comment pretty well. The clock had just struck midnight and people were pouring oil on the road on Northbourne near the the Carotel. These people had been told about a million times not to do it and Police were stationed there to stop it.

Lo and behold some clown in a convertible idles up, drops the oil, smokes it up and then bolts from the Police when they direct him to pull over. He hammers down to the lights outside the Gateway servo when he had to stop because of the huge crowd/traffic. The coppers catch up to him there when he tries to bolt again but one oficer reaches in and is able to grab the keys to prevent it.

Some yob from the crowd then grabs the copper and its on for young and old. I was in the riot squad van and we saw all this before us and bolted in to help the coppers. By this stage the crowd was starting to get stuck into the copers, trying to free the convertible, and a hail of bottles and cans started. We were very outnumbered and the crowd built so our rather cowardly boss withdrew us and procrastinated about regrouping while we watched the crowd go absolutely nuts when the rain staretd. A whole pile of property got smashed including Police cars, fences, other cars and the lights got pulled out of the ground.

We didnt start anything and unfortunately didnt have numbers to get back in their despite the fact that many of us were champing at the bit. The behaviour of the crowd was nothing short of a disgrace and Summernats was within a bees willy of being refused permission in the ACT ever again. Many Canberra residents still think it should be

Ah yes, the Xmas car festival. How could we forget that one !

0 fatalities in Canberra area over Xmas period, 2 in 2 days when Summernats is on, one virtually directly attributable, again you tell me. The stats dont lie
