July 8, 201214 yr #1 Hey guys. Having a bit of difficulty selecting 2nd gear first thing in the morning when it's cold. Have only noticed it over the last month and just wanted to know if it would be considered "normal" for these gearboxes. It's only second gear, and if I try and force it in, it will grind like the clutch isn't in far enough. It only happens when the gearbox is cold and only second gear.
July 8, 201214 yr #2 Do you warm you car in the morning for 5 mins?I noticed when I drive our manual turbo in this weather the whole shifter is cold as and have had the same problem.Try warming it up I noticed when warming it up it eliminates this.Normal maybe but it has been cold, freezing touching the gear knob.
July 8, 201214 yr #3 Yeah id just wake up 10 min earlier and warm the car up before you head off for the day. Happened to me in my old R33 nearly every day in winter when I wanted to put it in reverse to back it up out of the garage.
July 8, 201214 yr #4 Author Cool cool, will try. If it doesn't solve the problem I guess I can just raise the issue at the next service. Thanks guys.
July 8, 201214 yr #5 its because the gear oil is thicker in the cold and it cant get forced out the little groves in the synchro ring, therefor the synchro doesnt grab the gear and match the speed to the main shaft.is it going from 1-2 or 3-2? (just out of interest)just put it in the 2nd gate and pull back gently, which will give the thick oil a better chance to dissapate.dont know anything about the manual boxes, is there a thiner gear oil that can be used in them? I think its dex111 innit?cheers, andy
July 8, 201214 yr #6 I think this is a fairly common problem with any Tremec box. But don't force it into gear where its crunching. I generally throttle off and wait for it to drop into second when its ready. I live in Queensland were temps don't get down anywhere near the Southern States. Its like it knows its winter, maybe there is some inbuilt fuzzy logic. Cheers

He did say not to put anything thick in it as it will damage ring gears. But I'm talking about T56, the stronger TR6060 ( which incidenty, I was told is the old T56 magnum) I'm not sure about. Cheers
July 8, 201214 yr #8 Resistance into second is normal on the 6060. happens to me in the mornings. Just hold the shifter down (don't force) and it should find its place. I sometimes get little crunches here an there on freezing mornings. Doesn't even let me get into 1st at all in the cold unless im at a complete stop. Edited July 8, 201214 yr by Paulie2256
July 8, 201214 yr #9 I have to say this week has been more obvious cause it has been freezing in Southern States of Australia.^^^^ Like Paul said.

Cheers yeah I got a zf and know nothing about t56 or tr6060 (infact this is the first ivheard of a tr6060 lol) all I know is the lighter the oil the easyer the changes will be. 70/75 is pretty light for a gear oil, there normaly 75/90+.cheers, andy
