Oil Change Question

Iv'e owned a na BA 4.0l and have a BA XR8, and iv'e allways used a engine flush at oil changes, do I use one with the XR6T?

Also, what oil do people recomend?

Mate, good oils changed frequently along with the filter, say at intervals not greater than 7,000 km preclude the need for any flush treatment.

Modern oils, which are really complex material assemblies designed to work with your engine and with each other, contain a plethora of cleaning, dispersion, suspension, and pernicious waste neutralization agents. In addition of course your oil contains a complex mix of chemicals that undertake the job of lubrication, whether it is for low temperature, high temperature, high point load, high shear, start-up protection etc Then there are the anti-foaming agents... it goes on.

The fun of course begins in defining what is a good oil.

The truth however is that all oils from the mid price point up are all very good. Changed frequently along with your filter, these oils will protect and maintain your standard car engine for an indefinite period.

There are some exceptions to this observation but they do not pertain to our cars:

• some Euro cars are fussy about exact oil chemistry. Choosing the wrong oil chemistry will leach metal of some of the alloys in the engine.
  
• high revving, high torque engines such as the M5 V10 need oils that can maintain dynamic viscosity under high speed and high shear load. When this fails and it is not uncommon for this to happen, it is time for a rebuild or a new engine.
  

Once you have your good oil and filter and changed frequently, the defining variable that will determine the health of your driveline will come down to driver behavior. The obvious ones to look out for especially for a powerful turbo are:

• warm-up
  
• cool-down
  
• avoidance of high shock loads in the driveline (stalls, clutch dumps etc)

Thanks for that, I"ll be doing a service in the next week or so, I've used nulon in the past in both my other cars, and after some reading on here, I'll stick with that.

what model xrt have you got would help? stock or modified?

hard to say when you just say what oil for an xr6t

As for flushing - my method is that it relates to time between oil changes, and the condition of the oil that comes out of the sump. If its been a few k's or it looks and smells like burnt toast, flush it.

Oh, ok.

It's a BA XR6T, 5speeed, all stock, 140k, only ever had logbook services, so I assume 15k oil changes.

has the turbo oil filter line been replaced or removed or upgraded?

That will be part of the service, I've already grabbed one of the braided line ones off ebay, just waiting for it to turn up.

Pulled the dip stick yesturday, and the oil looks good, and dosn't smell burn't.

I would flush it personally I agree with above about modern oils but it has done 140k so its not a new engine and theirfore you have no idea about what oils they have been using and or combining different brands at service intervals, I always found when people would use a flush before switching brands of oil the cars would run better, your engine really carnt be to clean

Made the switch to Nulon 10W-40 yesterday during a 5000 km service at Nizpro,

Easily gained another 20 RWHP. Note: You'll need a little more than a six litre container of Nulon as the capacity is 6.8 litres (oil change with filter). Nizpro were in the final stages of moving shops. Also received a great complement when I picked up my car. The young mechanic said there was a lot of black on my car and the lads in the shop where talking, saying it was like Mad Max. I said yeah, that's what I'm shooting for!
