10/11/03 10:51 PM10/11/03 10:51 PM #1 I have a real silly question. Is there GST on cars, and what on road costs have you had to pay for your vehicles??
11/11/03 12:13 AM11/11/03 12:13 AM #2 Not a silly question at all.Prior to the tax reform by the Federal Government, there was a 22% Sales Tax on new cars. When this was scrapped, the 10% GST was placed. So the price of a car dropped by 12% (being the difference from 22% down to 10%)This is the most basic reason as to why New Car sales have been at record numbers since the introduction of the GST and the scrapping of the Wholesale Sales Tax of 22%.However, even though you only pay 10% GST on the new car, you also pay GST on used cars and car accessories, car loans, etc.You also pay GST on you Comprehensive InsuranceGST is also part of fuel as well.GST is paid Federally, but the greedy State Govts haven't left the motorist alone. The NSW State Govt charges a Registration Fee, a State Tax, as well as adding a State Tax onto fuel, State Taxes onto Licenses as well as having a CPI increase every 1 July for Traffic Infringement Notices. Then Local Govts also tax the motorist as well with parking fines (just off the top of my head), paid parking lots etc
11/11/03 12:59 AM11/11/03 12:59 AM #3 Don't forget too that if you buy a car such as a GT and pay over $57,009 the amount over this incurs a 25 per cent LCT. It is in addition to any GST payable. The LCT is incurred on any accessories that you order with the car as well , so you are better to buy these after you get the car. No LCT on utes. There is also 2.5% Stamp Duty to be paid.http://www.ato.gov.au/businesses/content.a...ntent/12912.htmDealer delivery charge was about $1500 on my car, it varies from dealer to dealer, some are negotiable on it and some aren't.
14/11/03 12:09 PM14/11/03 12:09 PM #4 The on-road costs consist of:RegistrationCTP insuranceStamp DutyDealer ChargesRego and CTP will vary state to state, city or rural and the type of vehicle whether it's business or private.Stamp duty is 3% of the price of a vehicle (to the nearest hundred) after any discounts up to $45000 and 5% from $45001 onwards. For example, lets say a car is $46000 (+ orc), the stamp duty is $1350 for the first $45000 and $50 for the next $1000 which brings it to $46000.Dealer chargers vary from dealer to dealer but generally from $1300 to $1600. And you also pay GST on dealer charges but not CTP or Rego.
