Rebuild? New? Or Upgrade?

Bought another xr6 turbo...cheap, now I know why haha

BA MK 1 5 speed with 70 000kms. Looks to have been a bit mis treated with a huge pointless intercooler on it. Dead stock. Has a massive exhaust leak between either the manifold and block or manifold and turbo, drove it anyway and still made good boost. notcied the turbo was a little noisy on wind down after shutting her off compared to my well maintained xr6 haha. Anyway took it for a bit of a stint for maybe 100kms and on the way home it lost alot of boost, almost none. sounded as if it had popped an intercooler pipe, but cant find any leaks. now when winding down the turbo is making a lot of knocking and noises.

Looks like it has definitely had a bearing collapsed or even a bit of sh*t has caused some damaged as the pod filter job is a shocker.

Im more of a standard well looked after car type of guy but seeing as im probably going to have to rebuild this piece of sh*t for realistically $1100ish, just wanted to know what peoples opinions were. I dont want to go mental but a bit more would be good. So what would be my best option.

Rebuild the turbo, new lines, fresh service ~ $1400ish

Brand new, new lines, fresh service ~ $1800ish

Uprgrade? flash, injectors, exhaust 10psi ~ $3000ish

Pockets arent the deepest but just wondering what your opinions were, keeping in mind we are dealing with a mk1 engine and a 5 speed box haha

option two mate.

if you can afford it go option 3 keeping in mind the gearbox and clutch are not that strong also engine is ok for around 280 kw's.

otherwise go no1 with a mild tune.

ok goldie, your a mechanic yes? you have steered a guy away from a brand new turbo for only $400 more than a rebuilt s/hander and even recommended a turbo upgrade with ancillaries, and even though he has stated he will cap it at 10psi, whats the point with a 5spd. zero headroom mate. he said he is a "standard well looked after car type of guy".

John, if you want more power than your driveline will handle, than it would be cheaper to trade up to a t56 or zf equipped vehicle. as for your turbo,a stock gt35/40 will produce more than your box can handle, and what would you rather have? new or reco? also, you wont need an exhaust to run 10psi, which in my opinion is about the limit of your box. :bangcomputer:

Never buy a second hander, from what ive seen the oil gallories dont match up to the oil grooves in the bearing back. As the result of mine was this and was shown the heat marks. get a mr turbo CHRA exactly the same as standard gt35 but upgraded bearing system with direct oil inlet for the bearings. Will fit straight into the standard housings. Hope this helps :) pm for any info.
